Description

The Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine Special Edition is designed for high speed home and business internet connections with dual wan (10G SFP+ and 2.5GbE RJ45 ports). Unlike the UDM & UDM-PRO the Special Edition (UDM-SE) includes 8 PoE capable ports allowing the UDM-SE to power cameras, phones and access points alike.

PoE interfaces (2) PoE+ IEEE 802.3at (pair A 1, 2+; 3, 6-)(6) PoE IEEE 802.3af (pair A 1, 2+; 3, 6-) If you do not see yourself needing better switch capability than built in 8 PoE anytime soon and foresee using beyond gigabit WAN soon, SE is better value. The amount of customizability can be overwhelming. But you can start with default settings and gradually change over time as your needs grow. Excellent traffic management and VPN support In fact, coupling the UDM-SE with the U6 Enterprise and you'll get a better Wi-Fi solution than the Dream Wall with a couple of hundred US dollars to spare. (The console can manage any UniFi APs via the Network application.)The Unifi Dream Machine (UDM for short) is a great choice for the heart of your home network. If you are building a DIY Smart Home or DIY CCTV system like me, you are probably interested in this flagship networking device from Unifi.

Wireguard is the latest VPN protocol. Debuted in 2016, initially only for Linux, but since 2020 has been available cross-platform (Windows, macOS, BSD, iOS, Android). If you want to use them with a non-Ubiquiti device, such as a managed Multi-Gig switch, set the third-party device's SFP+ port in DAC or Auto (and not SFP+) mode. Else, no SFP+ copper cable will work. All UniFi Cloud Gateways, as of November 2023. These models are newer, and they all run UniFi OS. They have been called UniFi OS Consoles, Gateway Consoles, and now Cloud Gateways. They act as routers or firewalls, and also run the UniFi software applications like Network and Protect. These can’t be used with Cloud Keys, cloud services, or a self-hosted UniFi Network application. Both the UDM-Pro and UDM-SE are great choices as the heart of your home/office network. By not integrating a Wi-Fi Access Point (WAP), you are free to mix and match any number of WAPs as needed. The quoted wireless specification is given as the maximum radio performance. Achievable range and throughput will vary depending on the regional regulations where the radio is deployed.

One benefit I hope it has is that it can trigger a graceful shutdown of the UDM-SE if it detects the battery is about to die which I wasn’t sure how to do with the cheaper setup. I’ll have to research what it does but if you can confirm that would be great as well. P.S. I’ll be sure to use your link as always since you are providing so much advice, it should be worth your while Short for point-to-point tunneling protocol, PPTP is the oldest among the four and is on the way out.

Powered by UniFi OS, the UDM SE gives you full control of all your UniFi devices, including access points, Protect cameras, Talk phones, and Access readers. It's also a future-proof console since it will be able to run all upcoming UniFi OS applications. On the other hand, the AmpliFi family, represented by the HD Wi-Fi system or the Alien, is for the home environment. They are simple Wi-Fi routers, easy to use but with a limited feature set.
