I love Sue Watson's books and with each book, I keep saying its her best book yet and I'm going to say it again with The New Wife. It is utterly brilliant and I for one can indeed confirm that I did not see the twist coming. In fact it floored me! Georgie is a single parent and has raised her son Sam alone following the breakup of her turbulent marriage. Sam is marrying his childhood sweetheart Lauren and Georgie couldn’t be happier. A dream couple but the nightmare begins when only weeks later, Lauren is found dead and the police are investigating. Sam is questioned by the police and Georgie senses he is hiding something so decides to do a little digging of her own. She goes to Sam and Lauren’s house to have a look around and discovers that her daughter in law was hiding a dangerous secret. With suspicion pointing at Sam, Georgie looks to prove her son’s innocence but her investigations could put her life in danger. Sam was the one who found Lauren’s body but is he the killer? Georgie just has to know. Of course she offers him 100% of support when he claims his innocence, but seeds of doubt begin to take root. Georgie cannot help herself. One day she wanders over to their remote cottage to look around. Perhaps she will find a clue that the police did not? Now on to Georgie- I just didn't like her. She came off as naïve and self-absorbed and was judgmental of almost everyone around her- she grated on me throughout the book. I think the story would have still been a good story if she had acted differently than she did. I also thought that Helen came across as somewhat of a caricature and not a real person, but maybe I read too deeply into that. However, three months after the big day, Sam called his mom with horrible news that Lauren is dead. She has fallen down their steep spiral staircase unto the marble floor below. It seems like an accident. However, it ruled a homicide and Yep Sam is the prime suspect.When creating a profile, it’s important to be honest and detailed.
