Finals of the National Rocket Car Competition
Following our fantastic success in the regional heats (first place for Rachie and Erin), Mr Buxton took our top team and a support team to the National Rocket Car Competition at Santa Pod raceway on Tuesday 5 July.
Thirty finalist teams from across the country were given 55 minutes to create a new vehicle, before two test firing sessions out on the drag strip.
We were actually allowed 2 teams as a few schools couldn’t make it, so even our support team were able to have a go. The girls all made a great effort and enjoyed it immensely, but the competition was stiff and we managed 11th and 15th place overall. Unlike in the heats, we were not able to adjust our cars on the line before the start, which meant we were a little at the mercy of how the start official lined up the cars. Also there were suspicious rumours of ‘vaselined axles’ about a couple of teams – so it was all very much like Formula 1 …
One of the organisers gave a personal vote to our teams as "the most enthusiastic."
The girls also watched two test-firings of a Guinness world record attempting model car, it travelled at phenomenal speed taking just a few seconds to cover the whole length of the drag strip – apparently its measured speed was over 500mph.
The girls behaved impeccably and were so smartly turned out that they made the front row of ‘official’ photos of the entire group!
