Student Delegates Debate at Model United Nations conference

By Kavya Sharma, Senior Marketing Prefect

Five Year 11 and 12 students from the Model United Nations Society have achieved remarkable success for the school, recently participating and flourishing at the Gordon School’s conference in Woking.

Alia Chohan, Emily Connors, Susie Foster, Katie Hearne and Scarlet Storr all put their debating skills to the test in the United Nations-style formal debate, held on the weekend of the 25th February.

All wrote resolutions to be debated, with committees including CULHUM (Cultural and Humanitarian), DISEC (Disarmament and International Security), ECOSOC (Economic and Social) and SPECPOL (Special Political and De-colonisation).

The skill and persuasive technique of the students was highlighted when all of their resolutions were passed in committee. Year 11 student Katie also had her resolution – The Question of Preventing Member States from Funding Terrorist Organisations – passed in General Assembly, where she succinctly presented her arguments to all participants and later accepted the Distinguished Delegate award.
