Description

While Valupak Vitamin D 3 is unlikely to cause side effects, some people may experience side effects. If Colecalciferol is combined with metabolites or analogues of vitamin D careful monitoring of serum calcium levels is recommended. Simultaneous administration of benzothiadiazine derivatives (thiazide diuretics) increases the risk of hypercalcaemia because they decrease the calcium excretion in the urine. The calcium levels in plasma and urine should therefore be monitored for patients undergoing long-term treatment. Medicines that should be initiated by a specialist and prescribed by primary care prescribers only under a shared care protocol, once the patient has been stabilised.

Because Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption, it is important for bone mineralization (hardening), which keeps your bones strong and supple. A sufficient amount of Vitamin D helps prevent joint pain and osteoporosis. Soluble Tablet - Soluble tablet is restricted NUH only: For use within critical care as a micronutrient supplement for patients with a naso-gastric tube who are unable to take oral medication. Marketed as a food supplement. May be used orally for reversal of excessive anticoagulation. See SFH warfarin guidelines or NUH guideline on the management of excessive coumarin anticogulation in adults If you are unsure whether Valupak Vitamin D 3 is safe for you, speak to your doctor or ask a pharmacist for advice. Who Should Not Take Valupak Vitamin D 3? Taking Valupak Vitamin D 3 supplements will boost the vitamin D within the body, keeping us healthy.A supporting prescribing guideline may be requested which must have been agreed by the relevant secondary care trust DTCs and approved by the Nottinghamshire APC.

Grey / Non-Formulary (undergoing assessment): Work is ongoing and will be reviewed at a future APC meeting. Tablets may be crushed and dispersed in water if needed. Liquid can be made specially if required. See here for general advice on dispersing tablets. Adv ice onindication, dose and duration of oral B vitamins see Notts APC Alcohol Dependence Guidelines . Allowances should be made for vitamin D supplements, other vitamin D containing medicines or from other sources.

If you have difficulty swallowing tablets, speak to a pharmacist about alternative preparations of vitamin D. You can get vitamin D as chewable tablets, liquid and oral sprays. Medicines suitable to be prescribed in primary care / general practice after specialist* recommendation or initiation. The licensed product (Thame labs) contains nuts and is therefore not suitable for patients with nut allergy. Low dose for maintenance or prevention (only prescribed in exceptional circumstances where self-care is not possible):

Colecalciferol 1000 IU Capsules should be prescribed with caution to patients suffering from sarcoidosis because of the risk of increased metabolism of vitamin D to its active form. These patients should be monitored with regard to the calcium content in serum and urine. Anti-convulsants e.g. phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone may diminish the effect of Colecalciferol due to hepatic enzyme induction.Prevention of vitamin D deficiency or treatment of vitamin D insufficiency: 1-2 capsules (1 000- 2 000 IU) daily. Higher doses may be required in certain populations, see below: The pharmacokinetics of Colecalciferol have been widely studied and are well-known. Colecalciferol from nutritional sources is almost completely absorbed from within the gastro-intestinal tract in the presence of dietary lipids and bile acids. Colecalciferol is stored in fat cells and its biological half-life is approximately 50 days.
