Y9 & Y10 Rocket Car Competition
As part of a STEM competition organised by BloodhoundSSC, on Thursday 23rd, a group of Y9 and Y10 students set off for Watford to subject their completed vehicles to final speed tests. The girls had been working during lunchtimes to complete their rocket cars to the correct specifications, aiming to minimise mass, drag and rolling friction. Following some competitive in-house testing to find the fastest cars, the final 4 teams were selected for final testing with real rocket engines. At the testing centre in Watford there was great excitement as the countdown commenced for each vehicle, and a loud whoosh as each team’s ‘launch controller’ pressed the button to ignite the rocket engine. Each car was speed tested over a 1m section on a 50m track. The teams then needed to calculate the speed from the time recorded over the 1m test section.
With a measured speed of around 74 miles per hour, Erin and Rachie were clear winners on the test day. We now wait to see how our teams have fared against the national competition from other schools.
