Offer something of value: Information (article, book, etc.); A connection; Visibility (invite them to a group); Recognition (an award they should be nominated for) Loy Machedo’s Book Review: The Charisma Myth: How Anyone Can Master the Art and Science of Personal Magnetism by Olivia Fox Cabane Increasing voice fluctuation means making your voice vary in any of the following ways: Pitch (high or low), tempo, volume, tone (resonant or hollow), or rhythm (staccato or fluid) Offering value will often create in others a feeling of warmth and goodwill toward you, and your departure from the conversation with be haloed by the impression of generosity you’ve created. Rationalization is true of negative things: If someone feels like they have done you harm, they will tend to convince themselves they were justified

After reading it, I can’t say it blew me out of the world, but I did pull what value I could from it. Below are key points in The Charisma Myth .

Chapter 4 – Overcoming the Obstacles

Goodwill is wishing someone well; Empathy is understanding how someone feels; Compassion is empathy and goodwill

Goodwill + Warmth ==> Have other person help you understand how they perceived the grievance ==> Be absolutely sincere Look into your partner’s eyes. As soon as you become aware of discomfort, notice where the feelings are located in your body. Two most important dimensions of Authority are the most easily controlled: Body language and appearance With the rise in never-ending distractions from smartphones and technology, the skill of staying present in a conversation is becoming rare. We all want others to understand and listen to us. So if you master the art of being present, you’ll distinguish yourself from the crowd and make people feel heard. Metta: “loving-kindness” – Exercise: Thinking of one good action you performed; Imagining a being; Imagining the being’s kindness and compassion; Seeing yourself through their eyes and forgiveness; Feeling the being’s wholehearted acceptance, imperfections and all

Chapter 12 – Charisma in a Crisis

Once she was able to ride the subway without people noticing her. And the moment she went out on the streets – everybody was once again amazed by her. Focus charisma is best exemplified by Bill Clinton. It alarms people that you’re fully present. Visionary charisma makes you charismatic because of the things you inspire people to believe in. Example : Steve Jobs. Human beings remember "firsts"- the first time something happens, or the begining of an experience- and we tend to remember "lasts" as well. So when you are about to make a critical/negative delivery , start your criticism with a positive begining, it will affect the rest of the experience. Start by giving them solid ground to stand by expressing the fact that you value them and they matter. Once they are reassured of their own worth, people will accept your comments far more easily and they'll get less defensive.”

William Bosl (Harvard-MIT): Brains wired to understand first, believe second, and disbelieve last ==> Disbelief requires additional effort, so physiological effects of it occur before thought patterns change to alleviate the discomfort this is a book that i finished, and automatically felt like i should read it again just to further absorb all of the points that she presented. cabane did a great job of distilling something as seemingly elusive as charisma down to attainable points that anyone can practice. she gave very practical tips that i have remembered randomly throughout my day. Charisma is in the eye of the beholder, and it cannot be controlled entirely by the vigor of one’s handshake, the rhythm of one’s speech, or even the sincerity of one’s attitude. Willpower as having a limited daily reserve (Baumeister, “Ego Depletion and Self-Regulation Failure: A Resource Model of Self-Control”; Gailliot et al, “Self-Control Relies on Glucose as a Limited Energy Source: Willpower is More than a Metaphor”)The other two components of charisma are power and warmth. We naturally give more importance to powerful people. When you combine that with warmth, you become super likable, just like a hero of any movie. It’s because warmth tells us how one will use their power, which makes all the difference. Strike up a conversation with a complete stranger. For instance, as you wait in line at a coffee shop, comment on the pastries and then ask your neighbor an open-ended question, such as: “I’m trying to decide which is the most sinful: the muffin, the brownie, or the cake. How would you rank them?”

a) focus charisma - the ability to keenly listen, understand, and empathize with people so that they feel deeply understood The “shoot the messenger effect”: the human mind associates emotions felt to objects of attention present when that emotion was felt ==> Operant/Behavioral ConditioningDistinguishing three key concepts: Self-confidence is belief in ability to do or learn to do something. Self-esteem is approval or value of oneself. Self-compassion is how much warmth you have for yourself. Fantastic book. Cabane is clearly an expert in this field and the techniques described are immediately employable. Not only that but (and here's why the book is really exciting) the speed at which you will notice how people begin responding to you differently is almost instantaneous, or at least I found it to be after finishing the book. Bonus points to Cabane for explaining that one must actually go through all of the exercises to ultimately reap the benefit. The layout of the book is also expertly crafted with a handy reference guide at the end. Plus her writing style makes it mostly a pleasure to read. I feel like this book is a modern day 'How to Win Friends and Influence people', or more accurately is like Dale Carnegie's teachings on steroids.
