Deanston is a sometimes overlooked Highlands distillery that has an excellent range of single malts, including some organic expressions and this limited release 20YO. The whisky was matured in Oloroso sherry casks for two decades, and bottled at cask strength without color added or chill-filtration. There are notes of dried fruit and vanilla on the palate, followed by a hint of baking spice and prune. You are responsible for all activities through your account. The finish is long, refined, and complex, and features a succession of sweet dried fruit notes set against a creamy texture highlighted by hints of walnut and tropical spice. This is an excellent, very approachable blended whisky, showing good integration and a smoothness and a degree of complexity that belies its relatively young age. It would make a superb after dinner dram, yet could equally accompany a rich bisque or a spicy entree. Served over ice or with a bit of water it would serve just as well as an aperitif. The French spirits company, La Martiniquaise, has released its Label 5, Sherry Cask Finish Reserve Blended Scotch Whisky, 70cl, 43% ABV, in select European markets. It’s not just the soaking wet freshness of the recently dumped sherry that adds magic to the juice — Spain’s increased heat and humidity means the whisky is spending more time getting absorbed into and influenced by the sherry-soaked oak than it does in chilly Scotland.Not technically a Scotch whisky (since the final barrel aging and bottling takes place outside of Scotland), Nomad Outland is a blend of around 30 malt and grain whiskies from the Speyside region of Scotland (where Macallan, The Glenlivet, Aberlour and other classics are based). They age in ex-bourbon casks in northern Scotland between two and five years, then transfer to ex-Oloroso sherry casks for three more years. And then the blend travels to Jerez, Spain (sherry’s ancestral home) to rest another year in very freshly seasoned ex-Pedro Ximénez casks in the Nomad cellars of the González Byass wineries. Palate: Towards the front there is a bright spiced honey which moves into a medium weight fruit-and-nut medley with unexpected sweetness. In recent years, a number of distilleries have offered expressions that were either “double matured” or finished in a combination of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks: Auchentoshan Triple Wood, Glenmorangie La Santa, and GlenDronach 12YO, 21YO and Cask Strength are all examples of this style. Oloroso sherry is dry, imparting notes of nuts, spice and dried fruit to the whisky. Pedro Ximénez, on the other hand, is produced from grapes that have been partially raisinated before pressing. It is extremely sweet and syrupy, and can impart distinctive sweet, raisiny and cooked fruit notes to Scotch. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect.
