Description

Secrets is an absorbing, puzzling crime thriller. It is multi-layered and complicated, with memorable characters whose past and present secrets collide in this well-constructed, suspenseful novel that is bound to keep the reader on seat's edge. As an author, and even more as a debut author, sitting down with a blank screen or blank sheet or paper at the start of the writing process can be the most intimidating thing in the world. I think for a huge amount of authors actually being a writer is a secret they carry for many years. I’ve worked in publishing for nearly twenty years but never really talked about wanting to become an author. When a writer takes that first step and shares their work it is an incredibly challenging moment. You have no idea how it is going to be received. It’s been very exciting to have such a positive response to my book first from my agent and then from all of the team and Little, Brown. But the true test will be when readers get to judge Twelve Secrets for themselves and that is a moment I will await with a degree of trepidation! What a tangled web! Brilliantly weaved and then carefully unravelled for the big revelations at the end. A totally gripping read." - Susan Lewis

So many killed to protect a secret."Secrets are always fascinating fodder for a novel. They can bind people together, they can destroy dreams, they can damage lives. Twelve secrets here as the title suggests. Twelve secrets that have impacted Ben Harper's life in the most profound way.

The book was consistently good throughout. We had a great start, plenty to satisfy in the middle and a rewarding end. This is a multi-cast narrative with lots of POVs. We follow a host of characters, but the central figure is Ben. Ben is a journalist, and it’s the 25th (I think) anniversary of the horrific death of his brother and his brother’s BFF. 25 years ago, when Ben was eight, his 15-year old brother was brutally murdered alongside his BFF in the woods. Ben was one of the eye witnesses. He saw his brother following two teenage girls into the woods. The girls were arrested shortly and sent to prison. Then 12 years later, when Ben was 20-years old, his mother killed herself. Poor Ben has been through a lot to say the least. His editor wants him to write an article for the anniversary. Ben is reluctant. Then shortly, the police turn up at his door...His brothers’ killers were set free with new names after serving eight years. And one of them is dead... The novel was divided into twelve parts, each starting with a couple of lines of crucial dialogue or thought contained in the upcoming group of chapters – a tantalising taste of one of the many secrets to come, an original use of foreshadowing, and a clever way to come up with your title. Ben Harper– is in his mid-thirties and is a prize winning investigative journalist. When he was just eight years old, his older brother was murdered. His father made himself scarce, so it was just Ben and his Mum to help each other through their grief. Then, ten years ago, Ben’s mother jumped in from of a train… With the ten year anniversary of his mother’s death looming, his boss, Madeline Wilson, wants him to write a story. The only thing is… it is HIS story. At first Ben is highly reluctant to do what his boss is demanding, but as time and events develop, he thinks that it might just be what he needs to find some answers, some justice, and some much needed closure.

Ominous at the beginning, breathless by the end ... this is excellent hardcore suspense." - Lee Child Holly - Raped by father in law, man she loves died, daughter kidnapped and threatened at knifepoint The character of Ben felt believable, you could totally empathise with his dilemma and the pain he was still carrying from childhood when he found his brother dead. Brutally murdered.

About Robert Gold

Absolutely addictive. An unforgettable and nuanced cast of characters, a claustrophobic setting, and a suspenseful and chilling examination of the dark and destructive power of secrets. You will sleep with your eyes open after reading this one. -- GILLY MACMILLAN Ben seems on the verge of resisting the persistent appeals from his strong willed boss until the body of another woman turns up and somehow they are all linked. The many themes were handled with care, such as underage sex, child grooming, marital problems and death of two young boys.
