Description
It is prompting readers to reflect on their own experiences that form ones moral compass, as well as our choices forming our eventual destiny. Master of the psychological thriller genre Ross Greenwood once again proves his talent for creating engrossing and gritty novels that draw you right in and won’t let go until you’ve reached the shocking ending. Characters are crisp and even with this debut, there is a sense of connection that helps the reader feel something well worth their while. These are all small niggles that did not affect my overall enjoyment of the book, it was a solid four star read for me and I would not hesitate to pick up the next novel in this series or anything else that this author has written. This interminable talking cut a large swathe through chapters where I would have preferred more nitty-gritty about the case.
It's always difficult at first to come to grips with the characters in a new series, but Ross introduces them carefully, without an overload of information and feeds more snippits skillfully into the text as the novel progresses. Yes, I love this are of England and was really looking forward to reading a murder tale based there. I must admit that Cromer is far from my favourite Norfolk beach (too stony, not particularly dog friendly, and too crowded in season) or towns (Holt which is featured and correctly praised in the book is far more to my tastes) but I was delighted in particular to see the excellent Doggie Diner featured (where I was fortunate enough to win a raffle for “what a load of old squit” Waffles the Giant Dog). What he has written here is a fast-paced, action-filled puzzle with believable characters that's spiced with a lot of humour. Greenwood is able to keep the calibre of his writing high and the action ongoing with this debut thriller, which takes a grisly murder and leaves it up to an established copper with a new team to solve it.Greenwood takes his time to delve into the psychological aspects of the characters and the emotional undercurrents of the story. A brutal double homicide murder on the beach, Dora Thorne and her dog Happy found both male and female Ron and Ruby Jerrod and the investigation is on to find out why. Unfortunately, the story slows right down with the introduction of DS Ashley Knight and the numerous police officers involved in the case. There were a lot of other characters in the rest of the team to get to know as well, so many that a couple of times I got lost as to who was who, but I think there is good scope for a lot of interesting stories to come out of this team in the future.
Using flashback sequences and a plethora of suspects, the story takes on many angles and allows the reader to feel fully involved. When more bodies emerge, worries that a serial killer is on the loose forces DS Ashley night to take swift action. There is always an aspect of all the characters the reader can identify with in some respect which truly immerses you in the story. The rest of the Ashley’s MIT team were introduced and I look forward to learning more about them in further books.
Greenwood blends solid storytelling with an in-depth exploration of human emotions and the consequences of our choices. An historic case from 1989 seems to be somehow linked to the current murders and Ashley fears that more bodies may be found.
It was on one of these occasions that I met my partner about 100 metres from my back door whilst walking a dog.
Bestselling Ross Greenwood is back with the start of an exciting new series, perfect for fans of Mark Billingham, Ian Rankin and Peter James. The forensics and technical aspects are spot on and added into the storyline to make it extra believable and enjoyable but at an excellent level that all can understand without it feeling like a lecture or being patronising. Whilst it won’t win any literary prizes, Greenwood has again painted a realistic world, based on a real town, real places within that town, with intrigue, fun and another excellent narrative that is never over the top. There was also one throwaway line which, as a lawyer, I didn’t believe was accurate which niggled a bit but I doubt anyone without a legal background would think anything of it, so I’m being a little pedantic here and I know sometimes I have to let things go for the sake of poetic licence! The protagonist here is Detective Sergeant Ashley Knight, of a Wymondham based Norfolk Major Investigative Team: when two bodies are discovered on a Norfolk Beach (one decapitated, one buried in the sand and left to drown), the Cromer based Knight is the obvious person to act as a day to day lead on the investigation.
