About this deal

There are, as can be expected from a film of that magnitude, no compression marks at all, although a couple of dark scenes (in the basement, for example) did show some color bleeding and blacks turning to dark blues. Whilst the dinosaurs are still largely convincing (the main road attack is awe-inspiring), there's in-built limitations to that technology that show up more and more the better your display is. Jurassic World is, perhaps, the most uninteresting of the batch being covered here for technical merits, since it's hard to imagine that a three-year-old Hollywood blockbuster that received a pretty stellar standard Blu-ray presentation -- one that now has a sequel -- would, in some way, get shafted on the 4K front. The brushing of the bones is a good example of this, and it's particularly noticeable on a large display. By all accounts the two tracks seem identical, and as the credits appear on the screen the drums echo around the soundstage crisply and convincingly.

As this scene moves on, we hear the portentous roll of thunder in the background and again, the DTS soundtrack drives this peeling rumble home with more force than its Dolby Digital counterpart: and the atmosphere is all the better for it. Dinosaurs have generated widespread, some might say mainstream fascination for at least a century now, and it's easy to understand the reasons behind this. But beyond that, and considering the rich strengths that the DTS-X track brings to the table, Jurassic Park deserves a five-star mark in the audio department. While the other three films in the Jurassic Park franchise may struggle to hold up with repeat viewings, it's hard to deny the greatness of what Steven Spielberg constructed with the original, and the spirit of that film adds fuel to the whole viewing experience of watching the rest of ‘em.While it isn`t a masterpiece (we`ll leave that for some of my other favs, like American Beauty and Memento) it IS highly entertaining, gobsmacking fun, even when, like me, you have simply lost count of how many times you`ve seen it (although I think its somewhere in the 70`s! Also here is a “dinosaur encyclopaedia”, a set of static screens that shows pictorial views of dinosaurs from the different periods of history. Depth is spectacular, contrast leans dark but surprisingly conscientious of underlying details, and the HDR components accentuate the radiance of truck lights and flares. Grant soon discovers that his hosts are not what they seem, and the island's native inhabitants are smarter and more brutal than he ever imagined.

There are a couple of clichéd scenes, and we know now that the dinosaurs probably didn't look like they do in Jurassic Park. The drums which accompany the opening logos all of a sudden take on a new life: forceful, certainly louder, and with a smile-inducing low-end kick. Another standout moment is the "sick dino", and this is a moment in the film which I'd not previously noticed for its sound. It'd all blur together so as to be unnoticeable on lower res releases, but in 4K, if you're sitting close, the colour contrast issues can sometimes be distracting. But of course, when you mention the words "LFE" and "Jurassic Park" in the same breath, everyone thinks of the T-Rex.

Therefore, it's even more understandable than normal that Universal have opted to use the already-created discs from previous sets to fill the "special features" quota, cobbling together the black-topped discs from the Ultimate Trilogy and the black-topped disc from the Jurassic World to cover those bases. The positives of the 4K UltraHD comes in a similar manner of getting details under control within the 2160p, 1.
