About this deal

The final panels of Batman: Fortress have the Caped Crusader showcasing his new powers by hovering over Earth, planning not to inspire humanity but lead it, eager at the chance to make a difference in a cruel world that always seemed to endure whatever Batman could throw at it. I've followed his art since all his early collaborations with guys like Garth Ennis (on The Boys and more) and Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan! Near the beginning of the issue, we are treated to an interaction between Gordon and Bullock in which Bullock is portrayed both as an idiot and a coward. It does drag for a while but picks up when they break into the Fortress of Solitude to find answers and hopefully some tech to help them defeat the invaders.

But the concept of Batman as a Superman goes beyond just being able to shrug off gunfire and leap across Gotham’s tallest skyscrapers in a single bound. Gary Whitta ( Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Darick Robertson ( The Boys ) have joined forces to tell a brutal and shocking adventure that will turn everything you think you know about Superman upside down! In the mysterious absence of the Last Son of Krypton, Batman must rally the rest of the Justice League to counter the alien threat but first, he must quell a crime wave on the blacked-out streets of Gotham! Now standing complete, Batman: Fortress is an admittedly strange book, with its awkwardly placed sense of humor and choice of having Superman willingly go into hiding when Earth is under attack.Outside of making all the characters look like fools multiple times over there aren’t any “new” ideas added to the mix.

What makes it slower is Gary Whitta’s verbosity too - if you’re not a fan of reading massive blocks of text on each page, you might want to skip this one.Later on Bruce monologues about looters “not being his problem” before going off on some vaguely political tangent about the American dream. By using technology within the Fortress of Solitude, Superman not only willingly surrenders his powers for good, he secretly transfers them to Batman to so he can become Earth’s next mightiest hero.

Batman confronts Superman at the Fortress’ center only to learn that the alien invaders had secretly been tailing him the whole time, knowing the Dark Knight would lead them to their prey. Thankfully, Batman: Fortress manages to push in that direction while keeping its feet on the ground enough to tell a good looking, grounded story that manages to shock and surprise and keep you engaged and entertained from start to finish. So Aquakid’s powers enable the sub to go waaaaaayyy deeper than OceanGate would’ve ever gone and the team begin the deathtrap run into the Fortress. Written by Gary Whitta, illustrated by Darick Robertson, colored by Diego Rodriguez, and lettered by Simon Bowland, all the individual issues of Batman: Fortress are on sale now from DC Comics. However, Batman accompanies him, and, in an off-panel scene, successfully reaches a compromise with the tribunal. There is certainly a story presented, but I am not sure that it would have been successful at garnering an audience. Without realizing it, I believe DC has told everyone that this title is worth less than the Imposter and that Gary Whitta is worth less than Mattson Tomlin.
