Although the 11 plus exam comes in different formats, depending on locality or individual school requirements, testing always focuses heavily on vocabulary: both meaning and understanding. Plus exams are often known for presenting children with words that are rarely used today but if you pick up a book by Arthur Conan Doyle you’ll probably find them all! A child’s vocabulary is effectively made up of the following; secure words, known words, familiar words, previously seen words and unknown words. Usually it is not used (because it would too intense) by families who have less than 30 weeks to go and is often used at a more gentle pace by families with more than 40 weeks to go. This 11 Plus Suggested Book List would be a fantastic way for children to put what they've learnt into practice.Mix fiction and non-fiction, try out different authors, genres, books from different cultures and definitely get acquainted with the classics. For example, let them read newspaper/magazine articles on your iPad (we all know kids love any excuse to use tech😉). When your child is reading, either by themselves or with an adult, encourage them to have a notebook with them to jot down interesting and challenging vocabulary and phrases. If a word comes up that children don’t know then you can, of course, add it to that week’s list of words to learn. While we know you want to do all you can to help your child succeed in their 11 Plus, try not to take the full load on alone – let us help!

It would be possible to list many thousands of words but the selection below showcases the kind of unusual language your child might encounter. Vivarium: "Arium" is an English word taken from Vivarium, which means an enclosure or container prepared to provide animals with semi-natural conditions. To perform well on the 11+ Vocabulary Exam, regular practice of 11+ vocabulary test papers is necessary. Some words ( but not all) will have obvious synonyms and opposites so it’s useful to note these down.
