Upon reaching and acquiring the target, the player uses target maps to play attack turns, each representing approximately 8 minutes of historical time. His campaigns, interspersed with fighter sortees, talks in relative detail, security allowing, about his companions, aircraft and methods of warfare. The final chapters concern the Dambusters raid carried out on the night of 16/17 May 1943 by 617 Squadron RAF Bomber Command, commanded by Gibson.James Holland's recent book on the dams raid provides a lot more detail and overall excitement about that raid. It is often easy to look at your own history through rose-tinted spectacles and ignore the negatives. This is a fascinating account of one of the war's most daring missions written by the man most responsible for its success. Since it was written in wartime, you're not going to find in depth analysis, but Gibson does lightly touch on some issues that will concern future generations such as saturation bombing. The book's underlying theme of boozy revelry continues, and one occasion the author ends up in front of a magistrate.
