This one-volume, jacketed hardcover edition contains the complete text, fully corrected and reset, which is printed in red and black and features, for the very first time, thirty color illustrations, maps and sketches drawn by Tolkien himself as he composed this epic work. I’ve wanted a full length copy for the longest time and can’t decide with all the editions out there. R. Tolkien, the reclusive, pipe-smoking Oxford don, was in the vanguard, and so great was his achievement that his name became virtually synonymous with the literature of fantasy. Even if you are a fledgling Tolkien fan like me, the book is easy to read and the concepts accessible.

I just think that The Shire and those rounded Hobbit doors are so synonymous with these books despite us not being in The Shire that long. The Lord of the Rings movies have really set the tone for how many of us think about Tolkien’s work these days.It’s difficult to imagine how HarperCollins will top this production for the book’s 60th birthday, in 2028 - better start saving up now. to Alan Lee (the previous artist for an HMH illustrated volume) have clothed the author’s visions in far more detailed and vibrant lines and colors. Featuring a fascinating introduction by Val McDermid and new illustrations by Juan Esteban Rodríguez, each copy has been signed by both the introducer and the illustrator.

Lee’s original illustrations have been reproduced to the artist’s exacting standards, in a scale and quality never seen before, and have been augmented by several entirely new images, including enchanting endpapers depicting the One Ring long before it came into Frodo’s possession, three frontispieces, two revised versions of existing illustrations, a new image titled ‘The Grey Havens’ and an exclusive giclée print.Echoes of Truth: Christianity in The Lord of the Rings explores the Gospel, Christian themes, and Biblical archetypes in J. First Impressions in this form, published by Harpercollins in 2002, featuring a number of full colour illustrations by Alan Lee. The naked hardcover is plain black, save for the stamped Eye of Sauron (visible in the top photo) on the front cover, and the red or gold lettering and ringspell on the spine. This means, of course, that the illustrations are smaller than I would like, particularly given the amount of detail Tolkien puts into many of them. Still, some books prove their worth with their undiminishing popularity among people who are born after the artist’s death.
