This book has my heart and I plan to keep it to re read when I need reminding of how important our family is. P'haps because I'm Welsh myself I can identify with her characters and the use of certain colloquialisms.
The plot is mostly set in the present, although there are a few moments where we flash back to different stages in the past 70 years. Everyone thinks they know the truth, but they are all keeping secrets, will Grace's party be a joyous reunion or a day of tears and recriminations? It got into the depths of mother / daughter / grandmother / great grandmother relationships in such a wonderful and both heartbreaking and endearing way. The end of this story is incredibly moving and brought me to tears (and I have never cried over a book before). Four generations of Welsh women are locked into this marvellously heartwarming novel from Ruth Jones: Grace, her daughter Alys, granddaughter Elin and great-granddaughter Beca.
I was completely captivated by this character-driven story of mother/daughter relationships and really cared about the characters; I was genuinely sad to finish it and leave them all behind. The reader is given windows into the thoughts and experience of each woman, but some of their secrets are only revealed later in the plot. Any mother or daughter will identify with many of the situations in this book and be encouraged by the final denouement.
What a wonderful, heart-warming, beautifully emotional story by Ruth Jones of 4 generations, trying to navigate their own lives and their relationships with others and each other. Noticed another reviewer mentioned she disliked the way RJ often leaves the endings off words, ie, "nothin" instead of "nothing and "somethin", not "something". Told from each woman's point of view this novel criss-crosses backwards and forwards in time, stopping on key events in their lives.I particularly liked the dynamic Soozi, Beca’s friend, a talented singer who says what she thinks, usually accompanied by swearing. Ruth Jones is best known for her outstanding and award-winning television writing, most notably BBC One’s Gavin and Stacey, which she co-wrote with James Corden and in which she played the incorrigible Nessa Jenkins. I must be very careful about spoilers in this delicious novel revolving around this family so full of resentment, long-held anger, prodigal daughters, and cold-water swimming. Love Untold is the first book I’ve read by Ruth Jones, but after loving it I’ve added her others to my (ever-growing) list.
Like many chic lit books the characters learn all about love; but unlike a lot of books, they experience the bad parts of love as well as the good. She’s determined that Grace’s big day will be celebrated, her own daughter, Becca is slightly mortified by her mother’s quest to party, much preferring to spend quality time with her great grandmother.
