About this deal

When Josh Henderson inherits a crumbling British manor, he expects to roll up his sleeves and begin the daunting task of major renovations. What he isn’t prepared for is the village of Good Winter’s resident coven- particularly the flame-haired Essie who has an icy touch and a preference for dunagarees. Perhaps even more surprising, is that unlike the rest of the villagers, Josh can actually remember the witches and their eccentric, shapeshifting home, ‘Beldam House.’ The chemistry between Essie and Josh is undeniable, but will an ancient evil, ancestral trauma and past relationship baggage snuff out their budding romance? I'm not going to get into the plot much as this book came out several years ago and everyone knows it's about a witch. She haunts the town, but her type of haunting mainly consists of showing up at weird times and places, creeping the hell out of everyone by just standing there, and then she vanishes. Okay, there's more to it than that, but that's the gist.

edit 03/02/16) I'm having to up my stars on this one as every time I pass a dark corner, I think of that bloody witch. It obviously got to me more than I thought... I will this book to turn into a series and to the author to write more books about the fierce and charming witches of Good Winter I will. I can’t say much else without spoiling any of the plot but I have to say it was definitely a wildly entertaining experience. In between all those edge of the seat moments though is quiet comtemplation, observations of human nature that dig into those dark recesses of humanity, to that part of all of us where we are still children hiding from the boogey man. This is proper old school horror where often what you don’t see is far worse than what you do – it reminded me of King when he’s right on it, messing with your head and getting you jumping at shadows. Hex had that in spades, it grabs you and does not let go, is paced to perfection, written beautifully and basically just scares the crap out of you. For the translation, HEX has been transposed from the Netherlands, where the original Dutch version takes place, to the United States. This is something I was originally wary of; I feel it sets a dangerous precedent, and that we should be able to relate to stories from other cultures and settings without needing them realigned with our own. However, given the current political climate in the United States, and the subtext of small town fear of outsiders that runs through HEX, I felt that the change actually worked really well and gave the story timely resonance.

All Thomas Olde Heuvelt Reviews

Considering I made it through almost 40% of this and I still didn’t know what the curse or the plot was says something. It’s slow, boring, and really fell flat. I read a few “cozy” fantasy romances last fall and loved them. I was hoping for the same reaction to this one, but I really couldn’t get through it.

But then reality starts to set in while you are reading this book. These characters are bat-shit crazy. They are mean as snakes. You have one father that is a main character who pretty much admits he has a favorite son...and it's not the gay one. You have women constantly put down..one was made fun of the whole entire book because she was fat. Another had an abnormally high forehead that the author couldn't shut up about.

The fire has stayed with them. Sarah performs some household magic, she’s got a very clean kitchen and a droll talking cat. When a podcaster starts investigating and seems close to naming them, the three get together for a spell. After that, all their magic seems to be heightened, sometimes ridiculously. Katrina is rich and Alicia is famous, but the magic is out of control. Unfortunately, although this was a fun and fast read, I wasn't quite as *charmed* (witchy pun!) by it as I'd hoped I'd be. I suspect YA readers who adored The Maze Runner will like this. I think 'Hex' is a better book, but it falls into the same kind of nonsensical plot outcomes and character behavior, especially when the author is writing from the viewpoint of some adult characters.

Essie Winterscale lives in a huge, ever changing magic house in the village of Good Winter. A house who’s inhabitants are as magical and eccentric as their constantly shifting home. Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.Thomas Olde Heuvelt is obsessed with nipples. There are so many damn nipples in this book. Gross rotting witch's nipples, creepy sexual assault nipples, giant metaphorical nipples. The nipples of a teenage boy are also described in detail at one point. This dude LOVES (or possibly is deeply terrified of?) nipples. The plot was practically nonexistent—unless you call Josh and Essie being horny and moping a plot! The whole time-travel plot line had so many holes, it was practically it’s own paradox!!! This is all it takes for people to plunge into insanity: one night alone with themselves and what they fear most.” Essie lives in a ever changing house (how cool is that! I love magical houses) with her coven of witches. Great! I want to know more! Nope, that's not allowed. How they get their powers is never explained. Where they come from is somewhat explained, but not really. Why the house is magical? Also never explained. There is a witch who knits the future, or sees the future in what she knits? It's never explained so don't bother. There's also a ghost witch. Yeah. Moving on. When some of the teenagers become frustrated with living under such strict regulations, they start acting out towards the ghost. Their cruel actions ultimately cause all hell to break loose.
