Buying a sharpener for each gardening tool is expensive and inconvenient. Get a sharpener that can sharpen as many tools as possible. A grinder is mainly used for grinding, cutting, or polishing metals. They are also widely used in the automotive industry because they are more durable than other types of grinders. Methods and tools for the grinding job Unorthodox ways of tapering your electrode It is a bit pricey but the FELCO diamond steel sharpener has unmatched sharpening performance. Just a few swipes are enough to sharpen secateurs, pruning shears or knives. Sharpen several at once. If you have a handful of electrodes ready to go, you can swap out electrodes when one gets contaminated. This means you can keep on welding without as many breaks to sharpen. If you have no other tools, you can actually use a cutting torch to sharpen your electrode. To do it, you need to get the electrode red hot using the torch. After that, you can squeeze the lever and move the flame up and down the tip of it. The flame should taper the end of the tungsten.

When grinding on a bench grinder, the electrode should be positioned lengthwise to the grinding wheel and turned around its axis to ensure an even grind all the way around. Pro tip: put the electrode in a low-power drill while you grind it. Spin the drill at the lowest speed you can get while grinding, and you’ll get a smooth taper with no flat spots. This is the easiest and most consistent way to rotate the electrode and get a good, even taper. Angle Grinder In this hand-held grinder, you have to use 110 Volt AC current. The pricier one is not always the best. Many expensive grinders are heavy-duty professionals. Their production is high, so they don’t care about the price. They want only productivity. If you don’t make heavy and versatile use, look for a cheaper one that serves your purpose. Dust collecting vacuum: For professional welders, only the ones with years of experience actually grind their electrodes by hand. The rest of us need to use a tungsten electrode grinder to ensure welding quality. The industrial-grade tungsten sharpeners allow you a lot more control over the angle and length of the grind, but they are costly. These are best for someone who needs to crank out lots of TIG welds every day and doesn’t have time to walk over to another workbench to sharpen electrodes.

It can be tempting to hold the rod perpendicular to the spin of the grinder. This lets the rod rotate naturally in your hand as the wheel spins. However, you shouldn’t do this. It makes groves around the outside of the rod that will cause the arc to wander. It’s hard to get a smooth, straight weld bead if your arc is wandering. If there is a system of cutting the contaminated part of the tungsten easily, it becomes comfortable for you. Taking time for grinding: Sharpie tungsten grinder is a very flexible and high-quality product among the hand-held grinders. So, I have again kept another model from this brand. It is a convenient tool though this one is not a pro kit. By the way, you may not like it for its price. In that case, I will suggest buying from the previous Sharpie grinders. To say honestly, this one is not as advanced as the previous models. Amperage makes a difference. At very low amperages, you need a precise point to control the small arc. Little things like the angle and the direction of the grind make a difference. If you are using very high amperage, the arc is much more forgiving of these factors.
