About this deal

Nikki is starting at a new private school. How does she learn about the culture of the school and figure out who is trustworthy? Have you ever had to start over at a new school? If yes, how did it feel? If no, how do you think you would act the first few days? This long-running series with more than 13 million copies in print takes Nikki from awkward middle school new girl to teen pop star, with plenty of laughs and minor catastrophes in between! So I like totally respect this book for pioneering a new sub genre I like to call: “2000’s Gothic”. You guys know southern gothic right? Well it’s just like that, but instead of the south being all grody and moldy, it’s the totally cool malls and makeup and girly aesthetic!! It just gets so over the top that it starts to seem fake and unsettles you, like you don’t even know the character whose DIARY you’re reading!! And it’s like so an excellent critique of all girls’ vapidity and phoniness, NOT!!! I actually read it as like a way the main character views the world, with herself needing such things as lip gloss or makeup to appear goodlooking for her crush or when those dreadful CCP girls use it to cover up their rotten nature, and when it fails Nikki’s little sister (a destructive force of nature, that helps sometimes) and ends up looking almost horrific (and very expensive) on her too! It’s a mask for the perceived wrongs In somebody, be they actual (CCP girls) or perceived (like on Nikki) but it can’t cover up everything, hence why the little sister ends up looking worse because of it. Just an excellent narrative device! Access-restricted-item true Addeddate 2020-07-21 13:02:30 Associated-names Container of (work): Russell, Rachel Renée. a b Cavna, Michael (21 May 2015). " 'Dork Diaries': The book empire built one awkward moment at a time". The Washington Post . Retrieved 23 August 2022. I just love this book now that I’ve read it all (and in one day!) and I look forward to the other horrific entries in the Dork Diaries series!!!! The series, written in a diary format, uses drawings, doodles, and comic strips to chronicle the daily life of its initially 14 (later 15)-year-old protagonist, Nikki Maxwell. [1] This spin-off series focuses on Maxwell "Max" Crumbly, the character introduced in Tales from a Not-So-Perfect Pet Sitter and, also written in diary format, his life in middle school.Several times in this book, Nikki initially discounts her friends’ assistance and then is pleasantly surprised by the help and support they offer. For example, Nikki finally shares her problem with Chloe and Zoey and feels so relieved to have their help. When Nikki finally pays attention to the gift Brandon is trying to give her, it turns out to be really sweet and helpful. Have you ever discounted a friend's assistance at first and later accepted it? What happened? How did you feel? Nikki doesn’t approach her mom about the video problem, her dad about the bug problem, or her friends about either problem. In the previous books, Nikki has also kept her problems to herself—even though her friends constantly prove loyal and helpful. Why doesn’t Nikki share her problems with others? Find three examples in the book that support your answer(s).

In response to her little sister’s fairy phobia and constant pleas for a bathroom monitor in the middle of the night, Nikki comes up with a plan to banish the imaginary tooth fairy in Brianna’s room for good using a homemade repellent made with water, vinegar, tuna fish oil, sardine oil, and garlic. What’s the most unusual thing you have ever done to get your brother or sister to stop bothering you?I really thought that this book was an amazing book to read because, Niki (the main character) is full of gossip and a lot of mischief. I thought that both beginning and ending was awesome because in the beginning Nikki seemed that she was too shy to stand up for what she wanted. But twords the tail end of the book it ended romantically by Nikki and her crush Brandon going on a date to a pizza place. Nikki’s eccentric grandmother comes to visit for Thanksgiving. We learn that she belongs to an elderly Segway gang and takes road trips. If you have grandparents or older friends/family in your life, what do their lives look like? How are they similar to and different from Nikki’s grandma? What characteristic of theirs would you most like to possess when you get older? Let your inner dork shine through in this funny and upbeat series about middle-schooler Nikki and her tales of misadventure and friendship! Washington, Arlene (February 6, 2015). "2015 Image Winners". The Hollywood Reporter . Retrieved June 22, 2020. Nikki writes that she is not jealous, because “How juvenile would THAT be?!” Her denial seems a bit too passionate to be believed, though. Do you ever get jealous even though you know you shouldn’t? How do you deal?

Do you think the “thank you for the oatmeal” note Nikki’s mom leaves is sincere, or is she trying to let Nikki know that she is on to her deception but forgives her? Either way, Nikki is very relieved that she’s not in trouble. Have you had a close call where you thought you were busted but ended up being just fine? What happened? Chloe goes Dumpster diving in search of Nikki’s diary. You’ve probably heard the saying that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. If you cleaned out your old “junk,” unwanted gifts, and outgrown clothes to sell or donate, what kinds of things would you get rid of? What would you be delighted to spot at a garage sale or discarded at the side of the road? Why do you think Nikki’s parents decide to deliberately create Family Sharing Time? Does your family do anything like this? Nikki suggests her family do an extreme sport, like bungee jumping, together. What are some activities that you think would be good for Family Sharing Time? Why? Over 5 million copies of the Dork Diaries books are in print in the United States, and publishing rights have been sold in 42 countries with translations into 38 different languages. [2] Books [ edit ] #And the gothic atmosphere is upheld by characters who are both unhinged and have gone mad. Mr.Zimmerman is my personal favorite because he is pure insanity who helps or harms indiscriminately and it is fantastic for drumming up tension, and the little sister does the exact same thing but at home instead of school, giving Nikki no place where she is truly safe as she should be in a gothic novel. In Nikki’s own words, she was trying to “do it ALL” on Halloween, including paint faces at the ballet class Halloween party, attend the Halloween dance with Chloe and Zoey dressed as a bag of trash, and attend the Halloween dance as Brandon’s date, dressed as Shakespeare’s Juliet. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you took on too much at one time? Were you successful? How would you do it differently if you had to do it over again? Nikki feels like she can’t ask Brandon what his hug means because doing so would betray her interest, so she feigns nonchalance and overanalyzes inside. Have you ever wanted to know something but been embarrassed or afraid even to admit you wanted to know? What, if anything, did you do to try to find out the answer to your question? Guide was written by Michele Gorman, author of Getting Graphic! Comics for Kids and Getting Graphic! Using Graphic Novels to Promote Literacy with Preteens and Teens. Several times when Nikki is writing about a conversation from earlier in the day, she includes her own very honest and blunt reply, then explains, “But I just say it inside my head, so no one really hears it except me.” When is it good to self-censor? When would it be better to speak up? How can we learn to tell the difference?

Nikki keeps Brandon’s secret, and she doesn’t even tell him that she knows. If you discovered a big secret about one of your friends, what would you do? The eighth book, Tales of a Not-So-Happily Ever After, won the 2015 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work – Children award. [12] Film adaptation [ edit ] Marcus Marcus is a recurring character in the Dork Diaries series. He is the guitarist of Nikki's band, Actually, I'm Not Really Sure Yet. He also has a crush on Chloe Garcia, and the both of them went on a date at the Sweetheart Dance in Dork Diaries: Tales From a Not-So Happy Heartbreaker.Ocr tesseract 5.0.0-1-g862e Ocr_detected_lang en Ocr_detected_lang_conf 1.0000 Ocr_detected_script Latin Ocr_detected_script_conf 0.9471 Ocr_module_version 0.0.14 Ocr_parameters -l eng Old_pallet IA18187 Openlibrary_edition Nikki finally gets an invitation to Brandon's birthday party on the 31st and thinks about the possibility of them having a romantic Italian dinner. After that, she and Brianna try a new burger joint called Crazy Burger. Chloe Christina Garcia Nikki’s best friend. Chloe is an avid reader and loves young adult romances. She is a self-proclaimed expert on boys and dating, and works in the library with Nikki and Zoey. She is described as somewhat prissy, but is a social outcast. Her parents own a software company. She is the fifth most unpopular girl at Westchester Country Day. Garcia is Latina. [4] This whole book is about Nikki’s missing diary. What would you do if your diary went missing? Where would you look? Who would you blame? Even if you don’t keep a diary, imagine you discovered that everyone at school suddenly knew one of your biggest secrets. How do you think that could happen? How would you respond? Nikki is helping Brianna sell chocolate bars for her ballet class, albeit reluctantly. She and Brianna go door to door and can't sell one chocolate bar. They come to the house of a chubby man who is on a diet and trying to lose weight, and he turns them down when Brianna unintentionally insults him for his physique. They don't sell a single bar.
