I still want to try the 15, but I like this enough as it is to not feel the need to pull the trigger on the 18. Not yet anyway. Nose: Big sherry, dark chocolate, over ripen grapes, clove, oak, caramel, dry raspberry tea, hybiscus. Palate: Arrives gently with a light mouthfeel and with a sweet touch, slowly building to the full experience. The waxy note from the nose is there and dances in betweeen the oaky, fruity and nutty notes. Nutty- and spiciness is more pronounced than in the nose but the fruits remain clear as well. There is a nice gentle glow and it gets dry and a little bitter. Nice development here. Nose: Vanilla and dried fruit , honey , cereals and a citrusy edge. A lovely nose. Just like we like them! Palate : Creamy and rich . sherry goodness can definitely be found here. Lots of dried fruit , sweet honeyed and mouth coating. Very nice. Finish ; wood , spice (ginger) cocoa and chocolate, some nuttiness as well.

Glendronach has, in recent years, been increasingly recognised for the exceptional quality and value of its single malts. While “richly sherried” is a perfectly apt description, it’s not as sharp with citrus as many sherry-heavy Scotch expressions. Instead, GlenDronach finds honey riding heavy on its aromatic profile, with austere, oily wood notes, walnut, and toffee rounding things out on the nose. The palate is quite rich and seductive, those nutty walnut and polished wood notes really driving the agenda, which ultimately leads you down a road to creme brulee, more toffee, toasted marshmallow, and hits of clove-studded orange, a citrusy overtone which lingers on the finish for quite some time. There’s certainly been times when I’ve been there myself – almost spoiled – feeling like my musings and notes on decades old expressions are simply superior to those of more mundane expressions. It takes time (and countless tastings!) to put everything into perspective and to recognise the rich tapestry that exists at every level of the diverse world of whisky. As the old adage goes, if you don't know where you've been, you wont know where you're going.

Glendronach 12 Year Old has survived the last forty-something years simply because Glendronach is a great distillery. In that time the 12 Year Old Glendronach has undergone all manner of changes - and we’ve not even mentioned the end of coal-fired distillation at Glendronach, which only happened in 2005 and will have had a hugely significant impact on the character of the spirit. Perhaps because that occurred before Billy Walker took over nobody cares? Malt and tobacco and oak and ambiguous sweetness oh my! Long and tasty it’s not a bad way to end a dram. Sweet, with a little alcohol nip on entry. You can taste the sherry influence, a little pepper on the development. Water tones down the sweetness a little, makes the development a bit dryer. Glendronach 12 is a rich, creamy sherry bomb that radiates flavor in your mouth even, though its strength registers at a mellow 43% ABV. But, hey, that's more than Highland Park 12's frugal 40%.
