About this deal

The clues Amy finds (some of which take time to figure out) lead her around the country, introduce her to fascinating people, and prove that the kindness, love, and the family life she craves exist outside of Aurelia’s sheltering wings. Along the way, she learns surprising revelations about Aurelia and a lot about herself. Amy’s journey – and, consequently, the novel’s structure – may be contrived, but the author wisely makes her aware of it. The obligations of her mission chafe from time to time, as does her burden of secrecy, especially when enticing alternatives present themselves. The Rose and Crown will suffice. The chat in the lounge may not be the most refined for a young lady with a mind to her reputation, but then I am no lady; this has been made abundantly clear to me. Quentin Garland’s portrayal as Amy’s knight in shining armor gets dashed by the surprising revelations of his philandering. Why did you decide to have Amy discover the disturbing truths about Mr. Garland secondhand rather than witness his deception firsthand?

AMY SNOW | Kirkus Reviews

For those, who like historical fiction, this is an interesting tale about a baby found in the snow by the young daughter of the manor and the struggle to find her place in the world thereafter. Betwixt and between, neither servant or recognized as a family member. As Aurelia states “ I am not sure I have done you such a very great favor. I have made you… a misfit.” Amy ends up as Aurelia’s companion through a clever turn of events. Nothing but silence, and a crow lifting into the air on silky wings. The baby was very cold and weighed almost nothing. Aurelia turned and, as fast as her skirts allowed, she ran. What led you to set your novel in nineteenth-century England, and what were some of the challenges you experienced in creating realistic historical fiction?

I was transported to the English countryside and moors of York as Amy Snow traversed the land on a "treasure hunt" of Aurelia's design to uncover her friend's deepest secrets. Much is made in Amy Snow of the rise of Queen Victoria and the condition of women. Discuss some of the feminist themes and concerns that emerge in the book. Consider, for example, the feminist Mrs. Bolton, the decidedly antiman sentiments of Mrs. Riverthorpe, and the marriage predicament of Aurelia as the terminally ill only daughter of landed gentry. How do the mysterious circumstances surrounding Amy’s birth link her to the Vennaway family? Given Lady Celestina’s tragic history of miscarriages, why do she and her husband prefer to turn Amy over to an orphanage rather than rear her as their child? Thanks to the letters that she left Amy, we also get to know the real Aurelia, Aurelia that so much valued Amy, that so much took care of her, preparing everything for her and making sure that she will have everything after her death. Thanks to Amy's memories of her, and also the letters, there emerges a picture a young woman, who was probably too clever for the times that she lived in, woman who wanted to see and discover, and not follow the steps of her own mother, cousins, friends in doing this what was thought as the right thing to do: settling down with a husband and several children. It was obvious that Aurelia had something to hide, and she has hinted it in her letters as well. there was a moment that I thought I guesses what this secret is, in fact it was the same moment that Amy started to guess, but still, I wasn't at all sure if I'm right or wrong. What aspects of Aurelia’s affluent upbringing does she accept and what does she reject? What does her rescue of Amy against the wishes of her parents indicate about her? How would you describe Aurelia’s relationship with her parents?
