AGM Plants - Ornamental" (PDF). Royal Horticultural Society. July 2017. p.106 . Retrieved 5 February 2019. Lingonberries can be found fresh from late summer through early winter at farmer’s markets near the Arctic Circle and in some places like Canada year-round. Hybrids between Vaccinium vitis-idaea and Vaccinium myrtillus, named Vaccinium × intermedium Ruthe, are occasionally found in Europe. In fact, the red color of lingonberries comes from anthocyanins, which may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits ( 8, 10, 11).

The fruit is a red berry 6–10mm ( 1⁄ 4– 3⁄ 8in) across, with an acidic taste, ripening in late summer to autumn. [16] While bitter early in the season, they sweeten if left on the branch through winter. [17] This recipe is easy, simple, and can be made in just minutes from start to finish! It’s perfect for sitting out on your patio on a summer night or enjoying during an evening picnic. How To Make A Lingonberry Juice Recipe? Kallio, H., Nieminen, R., Tuomasjukka, S., and Hakala, M. Economic Evaluation of Lingonberry Production in Oregon" "Oregon State University Extension Service" Dec 2003 [1] Test-tube and animal studies suggest that lingonberries and lingonberry extract may help control blood sugar — which may be partly due to their polyphenol and fiber content ( 22, 23, 24, 25).What’s more, like many berries, lingonberries are rich in plant compounds, including anthocyanins and flavonoids ( 8, 9, 10). Lingonberries have been found to contain bacteria-fighting capabilities due to the phenolic, antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory characteristics. Lingonberries are also known as cowberries and occasionally as mountain or lowbush cranberries, red bilberries or whortleberries. Where they grow The Lingonberry plant is usually around fifty centimeters tall and produces fruit that matures during the fall season from September through October.

The lingonberry ( Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.) is a small, bright red berry that belongs to the same plantfamily ( Ericaceae) as the blueberry and cranberry. This berry grows on a perennial woody shrub that flourishes in cold climates in the Northern hemisphere. People grow and harvest lingonberry in northern American states like Alaska, New York, and Oregon. Lingonberries also grow wild in the Canadian Pacific Northwest, Germany, Greenland, northern Europe, Scandinavia, and other regions. Twenty of those tested consumed 100 grams per day of berries, including lingonberries, for a period of eight weeks. The other group continued to consume a usual diet. The berries are quite tart, so they are often cooked and sweetened before eating in the form of lingonberry jam, compote, juice, smoothie or syrup. The raw fruits are also frequently simply mashed with sugar, which preserves most of their nutrients and taste. This mix can be stored at room temperature in closed but not necessarily sealed containers, but in this condition, they are best preserved frozen. Fruit served this way or as compote often accompanies game and liver dishes. Apart from cranberries, there are only a few natural sources of A-type PACs. Plums, avocados, peanuts, and cinnamon have been shown to contain some A-type PACs, but in relatively low concentrations. In fact, it has been reported that among plant-based natural foods, only lingonberries contain A-type PACs in amounts similar to those found in cranberries. However, large-scale clinical trials are still needed to evaluate whether lingonberries and lingonberry juice have anti-UTI effects comparable to those of cranberries. |Lingonberries, also known as cowberries or mountain cranberry, are tart berries that grow mainly in the Nordic region of Europe.Allergic reaction. One case study reports that a woman experienced an allergic reaction after consuming lingonberry jam. The authors note that this incident was the first known allergic reaction to lingonberries. There is little evidence presented for lingonberry’s anticancer effects. However, lingonberry extracts were shown to inhibit cancer cell proliferation and inhibit tumor progression in mice model systems [ 7, 36]. Similarly, when healthy women ate 2/3 cup (150 grams) of pureed lingonberries with about 3 tablespoons (35 grams) of sugar, their peak insulin after eating was 17% lower compared to a control group who ate the sugar without lingonberries ( 27). Jams and sauces made with lingonberries are also a popular ingredient to spice up your meat dishes. If you ever find yourself in Sweden, why not try meatballs served up in a delicious cranberry sauce. As a library, NLM provides access to scientific literature.
