About this deal

In Medias Res: Chapter 1 starts off after The Last Olympian, before several time skips leading to 5 years after the end of the Second Olympian War when the Olympians choose to open the gates and find Percy in Japan. Each chapter after that cuts between Percy’s journey there and the aftermath of the gates opening. There is also Triton, the god of Lake Tritonis of Ancient Libya encountered by the Argonauts. This Triton is treated as a separate deity in some references. [24] [7] He had a different parentage, as his father was Poseidon but his mother Europa according to the Greek writers of this episode. In this story, Pallas was inadvertently killed by Athena during sparring, and the goddess subsequently took a wooden figurine of Pallas and wrapped the Aegis (goat-skin) around it, thus creating the palladium. Amicable Exes: Percy and Annabeth may have split up to follow their dreams, or not really gotten together, but they are still good friends and keep in touch. The Little People do not like being thanked, especially after a deal as it implies that the deal is over at that the favour will be forgotten about. a b Conti, Natale (2006) [1567]. Natale Conti's Mythologiae. Vol.2. ACMRS, Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. p.708. ISBN 0-866-98361-9. Double-tailed tritons began to be depicted by the late 2nd century BC, such as in the Altar of Domitius Ahenobarbus. Rumpf thought that might be the earliest example of a "Triton with two fish-tails (Triton mit zwei Fischschwänzen)". [58] However the double-tailed tritonesses in Damophon's sculptures at Lycosura predates it, and even this is doubted to be the first example. [59] Lattimore believed the two-tailed triton should be dated to the 4th century BC, and speculated that Skopas was the one to devise it. [60] [62]

Our Banshees Are Louder: A white haired woman with bloodshot eyes, whose wail induces grief and mourning for people the listener knows that have died. Walking the Earth: As stated in the premise. Percy ends up sailing around the world, exploring different places with their own gods, and inevitably getting into trouble along the way. Pausanias was basing his descriptions on a headless Triton exhibited in Tanagra and another curiosity in Rome. These Tritons were preserved mummies or taxidermied real animals or humans (or fabrication made to appear as such). [72] [73] The Tanagran Triton was seen by Aelian who described it as an embalmed or stuffed mummy ( Greek: τάριχος). [74] While Pausanias related a legend around the Tanagran Triton that its head was cut off, J. G. Frazer conjectured that such a cover story had to be invented after a sea mammal's carcass with a severed or severely mutilated head was passed off as a Triton. [73] [k] Renaissance [ edit ] The Triton Fountain (1642–3), by Gianlorenzo Bernini, Rome The gods themselves, who can sense what is a happening within their spheres of influence. While they can leave their domains, they are stripped of most of their power. Zeus, Poseidon and Hades are noted to be the greatest gods of the West, but outside it they are almost human because the skies, seas and afterlife of Western Civilisation hold no meaning outside it. Domains that are more flexible, like philosophy, trade, music, inventions and war are more widespread and allow the gods to keep more of their power where they have influence. An example is Uke Mochi, Shinto goddess of food, who may only be moderately powerful but keeps the majority of her power in New York city due to the proliferation of Japanese food. Their power over the domains allow them to override the powers of others as long as their hold over the domain is stronger: Achelous, a minor river god, was able to nullify Percy's ability to control his river but was unable to stop his control of sea water.

Using his control over the seas to make better waves for surfing, but not to help him keep balance. In his own words, he isn't afraid of using his powers when it makes things more fun. Book Dumb: Subverted with Percy. Actually having help with schoolwork and not having to deal with the Olympians giving him quests which throw his life into chaos means that he was able to improve his grades. While he still struggles with English and History, he gets an A in Physics and a solid B in pre-calculus. a b c d Arafat, Karim (KWA) (2012). "Triton". The Oxford Classical Dictionary. p.236. Living Lie Detector: Apollo, though as the god of truth it goes further than just detecting lies and can even detect the degree of truth. He can also tell when it is a lie by omission. Other gods can cloud this sense to a degree, but Poseidon implies it takes a degree of power that he simply does not have when outside the West.Wilkins, Ann Thomas (2000). After Annabeth states that Athena joins minds with a mortal to produce a child in the first chapter, Percy concludes that Athena has mind sex with them. Annabeth is outraged, but Percy is pretty sure that it is what happens. a b Hansen, William F. (2004). Deities, Themes and Concepts: Waters. Do not admit to be travelling for the sake of it to Hercules, or reject immortality. He even went so far as to send Chrysaor after Percy, with the promise that he would be allowed to leave the Mediterranean. A triton (see §Tritons below) and merman are synonymous in heraldry, [15] and the figure may often carry a trident. [16] Forgotten Fallen Friend: Averted. Percy still remembers Zoe… and is none too pleased to deal with Hercules. Especially when Hercules states he didn’t remember her name. Incredibly Inconvenient Deity: Percy’s opinion of the Olympians. It is pretty telling that his thoughts on the Olympians sealing the gates of Olympus are that he missed seeing his father, but his high school life was a whole lot easier without them popping up and causing chaos in his life. When they finally start bothering him again, he muses that he can’t wait until they forget about him again. Passing the Torch: Several of the Camp Half-Blood councilors pass their positions on. Jake Mason passes his to Leo, and Clarisse passed on hers to one of her brothers before leaving for to join the military.Rewatch Bonus: The Wham Line at the end of Chapter 4 suddenly presents several parts of the previous chapters in an entirely different light. Beekes suggests that the word has probably a Pre-Greek origin. [22] At least a few sources deem Poseidon as a "prehellenic" (i.e. Pelasgian) word, considering an Indo-European etymology improbable. [23] [ citation needed] Bronze Age Greece Linear B (Mycenean Greek) inscriptions There are numerous universities, colleges, and high schools and businesses that use Triton as their mascot. These include the following: Athena bears the epithet Tritogeneia ( Τριτογένεια) "Triton-born" [42] and while this is suggestive of Triton's daughter being Athena, [43] the appellation is otherwise explainable in several ways, e.g., as Athena's birth (from Zeus's head) taking place at the River Triton or Lake Tritonis.
