About this deal

With the help of an idea from Clara about the discarded video, the case seems to be coming together, when a raging fire breaks out at Saul’s chalet, and the unlikely trio of Gamache, Beauvoir, and Agent Nichol try to rescue him. Émilie finally tells Gamache the heartbreaking truth about CC’s mother, and the Three Graces prepare to pay the price for what they have done. And then Gamache suddenly realizes there is one last horrible secret in CC’s family. In book two, there's another murder to solve for Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his crew as the repulsively cruel CC De Poitiers is no more. Deliberately electrocuted, the villagers almost seem to be celebrating that the monster is dead and for good reason, but her death is linked to another sad loss nearby. Oh, how do I love Louise Penny….let me count the ways…..I LOVE her books. The characters, the food, and Three Pines are such comforting reads for me. She never disappoints me. I have been trying to slow down so that I do not finish all the books before the next one comes out but, that is a lost cause.

A Fatal Grace: The second Chief Inspector Gamache Mystery

And I love it. The village of Three Pines and its stubborn, gentle (and occasionally murderous) folk who insist on living in a place that would kill you if you ran out of firewood. No one liked CC de Poitiers – not her daughter, not her husband, not her lover, and certainly not her neighbors. So when Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is called to investigate CC’s death on the day after Christmas- in the midst of a curling match- he has plenty of suspects, but apparently even though she was killed with the entire town present...no one saw a thing. Louise Penny herself stated that “overall I am pleased and relieved”, but admits that there are changes to the characters and story “that I struggle with”. As much as we are disappointed not to see this series renewed, we agree that some of the changes to the series adaptation took away from the series as a whole.

I like the picture,' he said, knowing the insult. He'd taken the picture. He knew she was asking, pleading, for more and he knew he no longer cared to give it. And he wondered how much longer he could be around CC de Poitiers before he became her. Not physically, of course. At forty-eight she was a few years younger than him. She was slim and ropy and toned, her teeth impossibly white and her hair impossibly blonde. Touching her was like caressing a veneer of ice. There was a beauty to it, and a frailty he found attractive. But there was also danger. If she ever broke, if she shattered, she'd tear him to pieces. Poor Armand Gamache can never have a relaxing vacation. He is away with Reine-Marie Gamache celebrating their anniversary when there is a murder. They are not far from Three Pines and his chase leads him there.

A Fatal Grace by Louise Penny | Waterstones

Grouchy Ruth Zardo is still writing her poetry, the boys are still running the bistro, and Clara is still making her art. It’s Christmastime and the thermometer is registering low, but spirits are running high in Three Pines – even though another resident of the small town was murdered. It’s a lot like one of those Florida senior villages, where the staff always tries to shut out all the nasty shadows of life. A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy. They’re all distinguishable and unique enough not to get them mixed up, and it’s quite apparent most of them are hiding things beneath the surface, and it’s only a matter of time before Gamache pulls it all out into the light. However, I do want to say while they’re all definitely suspicious, they are far from being unlikable. It is seldom the case for me to feel a happy contentment when opening up a book. A feeling of "Oh, it feels so good to be home". Louise Penny has become a firm favorite in the murder mystery genre and I just loved to be home in the Three Pines village of Quebec again with all the characters welcoming me. This time it was the day after Christmas, the deadly winter was raging, and more people would die than ever imagined. The villagers of Three Pines decide to hold a seance in the old Hadley House. When one of the members dies of fright, Chief Inspector Gamache is called to investigate. This case causes him to look at his own past as well. As for the town of Three Pines, there are many more secrets to uncover with these characters should the series return for a second helping. For now, this short-but-sweet adaptation offers a sweeping cinematic taste of cultures and stories that are deserving of the global platform Prime Video offers, all while doing justice to the best-selling novels on which they’re based.

The focus of the cruelty was on fat. And for a while it seemed that it was only the characters who were being cruel but then I read this passage about a 12 year old girl.

When Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is called to investigate a woman's death, it doesn't take long for him to realize that no love was lost on Miss de Poitiers. But even if everyone hated her - her husband, lover, and daughter among them - how is it that no one saw her get electrocuted in the middle of a frozen lake in the center of town? Starred Review. A traditional and highly intelligent mystery …. sure to create great reader demand for more stories featuring civilized and articulate Chief Inspector Gamache…. Highly recommended." - Library Journal He does solve the murder, and connects it with another murder in the city of Montreal, with the help of his dedicated team of excellent investigators. Along the way he uncovers some past secrets, which provide clues to the murders. I previously read book 1 in the series Still Life and recommend that you read it first. Book 1 was recommended by a family member and both my wife and I enjoy this series. There are a couple of characters that my wife really hated in this book. I read this library book in 3 days. Jean Guy is afraid of Nichol as he is worried that by trying to help her Gamache will be hurt. That could happen. Not everyone responds to kindness with relief. Some respond with resentment and lash out. They can’t tell if the kindness is real or a form of superiority. Jean Guy is also worried about old evils resurfacing from the Arnot case and Nichol being their spy and representative.
