About this deal

Wet for the mainland today, with hill sleet and snow, especially in the morning. Dry and bright for the Isles at first, but spells of heavy rain expected later in the afternoon. Windy on the Isles. Aberlour 14 Year Old Double Cask has recently joined their core range alongside the 12, 16, and 18 Year Old releases. It is a combination of first-fill American oak (bourbon) casks and Oloroso sherry casks. You are responsible for all activities through your account. Aberlour is currently owned by Chivas Brothers, part of the larger Pernod Ricard group who took over the distillery in the 1970s. It has an annual production capacity of 3.8 million litres, although plans are submitted for a major upgrade and expansion. Aberlour sits comfortably within the Top 10 in terms of worldwide single malt sales and market share, being particularly popular in France and the USA.

Today’s particular release is from ten years ago already, so the whisky for this was actually distilled in the early nineties. It is a Double Cask whisky, meaning it matured both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. I've never really experimented with whisky from Speyside, a region in North East Scotland around the River Spey known for its best-selling whiskies such as The Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. The colour is golden amber and the nose has a lovely sweetness and richness to it. Aromas of brown sugar, caramel and heather honey mingle with some dried fruit (think of raisin, sultana and candied orange peel especially) initially. Then a hint of ripe brambles comes through along with a good pinch of baking spice (imagine cinnamon and all-spice in particular) and a distinct oat-like quality.

Yep you’re on the money. Just wrong really. Why put some much into something for 14 years only to rip all of the decent flavours out of it to make it 40%. My advice, having bought a bottle, would be to look elsewhere I have not enjoyed a sweet whisky like this in a long time. Aberlour's use of two barrels to age the single malt - Oloroso Sherry casks and first fill American Oak casks - has lead to a unique but drinkable option. The flavours are typical Speyside but with a summer twist. It's full of vanilla flavours but there is a definite hint of summer fruits. Light, sweet and smooth, the whisky is beautifully balanced. It's a refreshing whisky that's perfectly pitched for a summer dram. The finish is of decent length. The sweetness and richness stretch things out as the individual elements begin to fade - first the honey/toffee, then the green apples, then the dried fruit notes and finally the cereal and baking spice characteristics. As a curious beginner or a seasoned whisky drinker, Aberlour has managed to create a fairly young whisky that is mature enough to do both. Get yourself a bottle this summer. Aberlour is quite a traditional distillery on the whole, but that doesn’t stop them from doing intriguing things with their malt. They do not shy away from a challenge when it comes to it, and explore maturation techniques frequently. The Aberlour 14 years old Double Cask Matured is a very pleasant single malt that offers plenty to the drinker. The layers of aromas and flavours build up and the results are delicious. This whisky would be the perfect introduction for someone to the richer style/sherry cask style of whiskies and to what Aberlour do. It has a lovely level of richness and sweetness without going too far in either direction, plus a soft and gentle mouth feel. Palate: Full texture, round and creamy, with sweet dark cherries, fudge, and mocha coffee with a refreshing minty breeze. If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. This is a bottle for those who enjoy their single malt whisky and want something high quality at a fair price. It's a good bottle to experiment with Speyside whiskies if you have not had much experience and the light flavours mean it is a great whisky for warm evenings and summer days.

We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. There you find the 'peated' whiskies - which means it is those with a smokier taste. My favourite comes from Laphroaig, a love-it-or-hate-it whisky that tastes a little like smoked ham and can taste a bit like medicine for some. Nose: Big aromatics on this one with cloves, cardamom and camphor, and then comes a wave of sweeter notes like toffee, milk chocolate and orange rind. Terribly disappointing to say the least. Watery and something about it even tasted off to me like it was half built with a synthetic whisky alternative. Thought I was maybe having a bad day and my taste buds were off but successive attempts yielded nothing but an aversion. I tried, Lord I tried with it but I’ve now put it away in the cupboard out of sight, out of mind and am waiting for someone to wrong me so I can give it to them.
