Google is planning to add support for Android apps to future versions of Chrome OS and some Chromebooks -- but not the 3189 -- can already do it, if users install a beta version of the operating system. However, with its touch screen and convertible form factor, Dell's laptop should do a great job running Android software when the time comes. The Chromebook 11 comes with a total of four USB ports, an impressive amount for a Chromebook at any price. There are two USB-C ports on our review unit, either of which can accept the power adapter plug. There are also two USB Type-A ports, useful for connecting a wired mouse or perhaps an external drive to supplement the Dell's internal storage. Unfortunately, there's no SD or microSD card slot, so you can't expand storage that way. On a working Chromebook, go to the Chrome Web Store and install the Chromebook Recovery Utility extension. Dell's laptop is a good size for fitting into elementary and middle schoolers' hands and bags. The Chromebook 3189 measures 12 x 8.2 x 0.9 inches, and weighs 3.2 pounds. The outer dimensions are about the same as the Asus Chromebook Flip C302CA, which measures 11.9 x 8.3 x 0.6 inches and weighs only 2.6 pounds, but the C302CA's screen is 1 inch larger than the 3189's (12 inches versus 11 inches for the 3189). The Acer Chromebook R 13 measures 12.8 x 8.9 x 0.6 inches and weighs 3.2 pounds, and has a 13-inch screen; the Dell Chromebook 3180 measures 11.9 x 8.1 x 0.8 inches, weighs 2.8 pounds, and has the same size screen as the Chromebook 3189, at 11 inches.The screen brightness was fine for indoor use, measuring 223 nits, compared with 291.8 nits for the Chromebook Flip C302CA and 210 nits for the Chromebook 3180. But it was well below the category average of 301.8, so you wouldn't want to use it near a sunny window. The Chromebook 11 is also available in a 2-in-1 convertible version, which lets you rotate the screen 360 degrees to use it as a tablet. However, if you think your kids will primarily be using their Chromebook as a tablet, you may want to go with the detachable Lenovo Chromebook Duet instead.

The display had a brightness of just 210 nits, compared to 235 nits for the Chromebook N7, 250 nits for the Chromebook C202 and 254 nits for the N22 Touch Chromebook. All of these results are well below the category average of 303.5. While the Chromebook doesn’t look like much, it definitely has a sturdy feel to it and the extra features like the rubberized edge and spill-resistant keyboard add an extra kid-proof level to this computer. Ultimately, the Chromebook 11 (3100) is one of the best Chromebooks you can buy for your kids to use for work and play. It's specifically designed to deal with everyday bumps and modest abuse in a way that similarly priced competitors aren't. True, it's not as polished or versatile as a tablet; if you're considering one of those, the Chromebook Duet and its detachable keyboard likely makes more sense. You successfully recovered your Chrome computer, but now Windows does not recognize the whole size of the USB or SD card that is used for recovery.

Note: When you create a recovery flash drive, be aware the tool may not be available in all languages. The Dell Chromebook 3189 lasted for 9 hours and 9 minutes in our tests (continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi), which was slightly above the category average of 8:12, and enough to get most students through the school day without a charger. The Chromebook R 13 came in at an impressive 11 hours, the Chromebook Flip C302CA lasted for 8:52 and the Chromebook 3180 lasted for 8:55. It has quite a long battery life that lasts for almost 9 hours, making it the perfect choice for people who use it in their daily basic lives for offices and schools. It also absorbs heat and makes it cool The Chromebook 11 is comparable with the Acer Chromebook Spin 311 and Samsung Chromebook 4, both of which are similarly priced systems with the same screen size. The Dell is significantly faster than the Lenovo Chromebook Duet, which is a detachable tablet with an ARM rather than x86 processor, but much slower than the more expensive Pixelbook Go, which boasts an Intel Core CPU. As far as performance goes, our review unit featured 4GB of RAM with the 32GB eMMC hard drive and I honestly wouldn’t recommend going with anything less. There were absolutely no performance issues with this configuration and everything from the Google apps to video watching and music streaming ran as expected without any hiccups.The Chromebook 3180 stayed pleasantly cool throughout our tests. After we streamed video for 15 minutes, the touchpad measured 78 degrees Fahrenheit, while the keyboard and underside hit just 88 and 94 degrees, respectively. All of those temperatures are below our 95-degree comfort threshold. The 3189's Delta-E color accuracy score of 0.3 is excellent (0 is ideal). It scored better than the category average of 2.4, and beat the scores of the Chromebook R 13 (1.1) and the Chromebook Flip C3-1CA (1.6); the Chromebook 3180 also scored 0.3. Warning: Do not use this guide if you are using a managed Chrome device. You will NOT be able to re-enroll your device after PowerWashing it.
