About this deal

The Philips HR1889 Viva is the more affordable “slow”, or masticating, juicer from Philips. It sits alongside the pricier Avance HR1947. While these amounts were sufficient in the context of the recipes, something about kale proved unnerving enough for the juicer to begin wobbling almost uncontrollably. Although for testing I normally use the most widely available sliced variety of kale, I decided to also test the Avance HR1922 with larger kale leaves. The Philips Avance HR1922 is a high-end centrifugal juicer. It sits within the upmarket Avance range – which also includes the highly rated Philips Avance MicroMasticating Juicer HR1947 – versus the more affordable and less powerful Viva Collection. Compared to a centrifugal juicer, a slow juicer squeezes more concentrated juice with more fiber and the juice yield is higher with a slow juicer. On the other hand, a juice from a juicer is ready faster, because you do not have to cut the fruit and vegetables, thanks to the large filling funnel.

Switching on the Philips HR1889, you’ll hear a high-pitched bleep before the motor springs into action, making the screw turn inside the juicing unit. The drink was quite frothy, probably down to the fact that there’s no separator to reduce the foam on top. With honey added, the drink was inoffensive but not particularly pleasant – it would have benefitted from including fruit.I achieved excellent results juicing leafy greens, with a 100g of standard shredded supermarket kale producing 70ml of juice. There was a tiny bit of sediment, but this wasn’t particularly noticeable when mixed into the juice.

Next I juiced two medium-sized Granny Smith apples, which yielded 150ml of juice, with a little bit a pulp. This is a relatively standard result. While I was busy admiring the compact design and the little details that the Avance HR1922 gets right (the drip-stop spout, the cord storage, the spotless clean-up – I can go on), it also managed to deliver some outstanding juice. This includes the micro-sieve, which is relatively small. Barely bigger than a compact pod coffee machine, and just as stylish, the Avance juicer is mini in more ways than one. It uses micro-masticating technology to maximise its yield (getting up to 90% of your fruit and vegetable into the glass), squeezing every last drop from foodstuffs from leafy greens to nuts.

You may also see these called slow juicers, or masticating juicers. They slowly turn a screw piece to crush fruit and vegetables. A handy drip-stop means the juicing bowl can be sealed without spillage. No cleaning brush is provided, but that hardly feels necessary here, since the filter attached to the squeezing chamber can be easily cleaned with running water. The Viva HR1889 also comes with a colourful recipe booklet and instructions on finding and using the Philips Healthy Drinks app – a neat touch. Like other Philips juicers, it comes with a recipe booklet and features neat touches such as integrated cord storage.

Use fresh fruits and vegetables, as they contain more juice. You get the best taste if you use fruits and vegetables directly from the fridge. I started by making a double portion of the Farmers’ Market juice from the recipe booklet, which contains strawberries, apples, carrots and some cucumber. The Avance HR1922 is also dishwasher-safe – although after the pre-clean rinse you’ll unlikely need to use it.Anti-drip spout The spout should stop any remaining juice inside the machine from dripping onto your worktop after you've finished juicing. Look out for a drip-stop spout – this works by flipping upwards and tends to be the most effective. We ranked juicers on how noisy they were. While all juicers will make some noise, the best ones were much quieter than others. Setting up this juicer, I wondered how much it could fit. The answer is more than enough. At 2.1 litres, the pulp container isn’t the biggest on the market, but it’s plenty big enough, with Philips claiming you can juice up to 3 litres before having to empty it. If anything, you’ll have to get another jug first, since the standard jug can accommodate only 1 litre of juice. If you don't have much time or need to prepare a glass of morning OJ for everyone in the family, then a centrifugal juicer will be more your speed. These are sometimes also called fast juicers. They shred ingredients with a fast-spinning blade surrounded by a sieve. The centrifugal force pushes food through the sieve, separating the juice and pulp.
