About this deal

A lot of organic wet wipes on the market are made of only a few ingredients, which means there’s basically nothing to settle at the bottom. True, there exist ingredients that contain the word “alcohol” in their names, such as cetearyl alcohol, behenyl alcohol, and benzyl alcohol. Yet, due to a different chemical structure, they are not alcohols in the common sense of the word. To begin, in my annually updated Baby Wipes Rating list e-book, phenoxyethanol has a rating of 4. (I use the scale of 0-10 with 0 as the safest and 10 as the most toxic.) We’re all familiar with the fact that public toilet seats are one of the most critical public areas when it comes to maintaining hygiene. Natural ingredients: Because a baby’s skin is still developing, irritation can develop very easily. As Babyganics says, “babies’ most sensitive places are also the messiest.” Harsh additives and excessive friction can contribute to skin irritation, diaper rashes and discomfort. Manufacturers of baby wipes need to find a balance between mild, non-irritating ingredients and those that will be effective enough to clean with as few passes over the skin as possible.

As already said, those dates are there mainly to protect the manufacturer (in case something bad happens to those wet wipes after a certain period of time). Unfortunately, phthalates, e.g., diethyl phthalate, are common fragrance ingredients. For your information, the European Chemicals Agency states that diethyl phthalate is “under assessment as endocrine disrupting” ( source). Wet wipes are multi-practical, which means they are not only suited for diaper changes, but you can also use them for your beauty regimen or cleaning your house. Wipe materials: Baby wipes are made from nonwoven fabrics that usually comprise a combination of natural and synthetic materials. None of the wipes we tested are biodegradable, compostable or flushable.Indeed, even the best-rated infant wipes may contain ingredients that can potentially irritate the baby’s gentle skin. For instance, even chamomile and coconut oil can cause irritation in sensitive people, not to mention babies whose skin gets rubbed all the time. Conversely, cetearyl alcohol and behenyl alcohol are fatty alcohols that have a waxy texture and function as emulsifiers. Specifically, they help soften the skin and improve the texture and consistency of the formulation. Not realising it was caused by the Kirkland wipes and being very concerned, I took my daughter to the doctor several times. Various creams (Canesten, Sudocream, etc) were prescribed – needless to say none of them worked.

Kirkland baby wipes are free of parabens, chlorine, alcohol, and dye. Your child will love the touch of Kirkland baby wipes, we highly recommend the product. Conclusion Baby wipes don’t really have an expiration date, but they might become dried out, less effective, or they might accumulate mold over time. If we rate phenoxyethanol based on a rating system between 0 to 10 where 0 means safest and 10 means toxic, Phenoxyethanol can be rated as 4. Phenoxyethanol mainly works as a preservative and prevents bacteria or mold to grow in the wipes.

The wipe test: cleaning

We however noticed that when she went to nursery (where different wipes were used), her skin improved slightly during the week. However at the weekend when she was at home, it got worse! If your baby likes to play Picasso with his crayons on the walls, you can easily remove those marks with wipes. Bottom line, Kirkland Signature baby wipes have neither alcohol, nor any of the ingredients with the word “alcohol” in them. What are Costco baby wipes made of? Besides, the European Chemicals Agency warns that ethylene oxide is mutagenic, toxic to reproduction, and under assessment as endocrine disrupting. And phenol may cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure and is suspected to be mutagenic, i.e., causing genetic defects ( source). In 2013, I wrote a blog post about Kirkland Signature baby wipes. At that time, the list of ingredients contained some red flags – even formaldehyde! The blog post attracted over 1,000 readers daily!
