Nose: Subtle and nuanced with a nice melding of vanilla, butterscotch and almond accented by fine oak spice. The fine oak spices build, bringing dusty impressions of sandalwood, ginger and light fruity citrus zest forward. There are hints of cinnamon as well. Hints of tropical fruit (banana and coconut) add to the nuanced aroma. After a few minutes I notice that the impressions vanilla, almond and butterscotch had almost melded completely bring a nice impression of marzipan to the fore. Neptune Rum is a British company was founded in 2017 in Cheltenham, UK. It was inspired by the Roman God Neptune, god of water and seas. Neptune Barbados Gold Rum is apparently a blend of 3, 5 and 8 year old molasses based rums from Barbados distilled at the family owned Four Square Distillery (This distillery is located at a former 17th-century sugarcane plantation at the southern end of Barbados). The blended spirit were aged in Amercan Oak barrels with the final rum bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume. Neptune is the ancient Roman god of freshwater and the sea in Roman religion, a God that carried a mighty trident and rode on a glorious chariot pulled by either sea creatures or horses, he is the counterpart of the Greek god Poseidon.

Neptune’s final production stage involves a specific cold-filtration process and the addition of soft spring water to dilute the rum from 68% ABV cask strength to its 40% bottling strength. It is bottled in England, without any additional colouring or sugar. Davies was keen to emphasise that he wanted Neptune “to be really honest and very transparent” as a brand. “A lot of producers in the rum industry are a little cloak-and-dagger, which is thankfully coming to an end,” he added. Palate: A viscous and refined palate is filled with ripe peaches, as well as touches of shredded coconut and green banana. More vanilla is present underneath with a faint hint of returning peppercorn and toasted white fruit. Neptune Rum Barbados Gold is one of the world’s most awarded rums with more than 70 global awards. It is an exceptionally smooth pot and column stilled rum balanced with nuances of apricot, banana and coconut overlaid with soft hints of honey and vanilla. They key to success isn’t just to source great rum and make an amazing blend out of it. One of Neptune’s strengths as a brand is savvy marketing. Ensuring transparency in its production process, an increasingly important trend that modem consumers respond to, in an example of this. As is the brand’s desire to become more ethical, with plans to go plastic-free by next year and found its own charity. Overall: Mature, full-bodied and smooth, this is an exceptionally impressive rum for its age. It strikes you as a very mixable spirit, too. The duo secured an audience with the well-respected, outspoken rum aficionado and fourth generation rum master at Foursquare Distillery, Richard Seale. Molloy described it as being akin to being in the headmaster’s office. However, according to Davies, Seale was “blown away by my blend”, while Molloy noted that Seale’s comment that Neptune had “made a bloody good rum out of my rum”. Seale agreed to work with them, with current production now standing at about 2,500 bottles every three months.
