About this deal

The guitarist was always one of the leading inventors of the huge riffs but here you can really hear him play with a touch that few, if any, could match.

Black Sabbath: Live Evil (Super Deluxe Edition) Review: Black Sabbath: Live Evil (Super Deluxe Edition)

In the liner notes to the 2008 retrospective The Rules of Hell, vocalist Ronnie James Dio remembers, "It was an excellent tour. The newly minted quartet debuted in 1980 with Heaven and Hell, a platinum-certified smash that won over fans of the original lineup. The collections feature two versions of the legendary album: a newly remastered version by Andy Pearce along with a new mix created from the original analogue multi-tracks by longtime band associate Wyn Davis. Over its 40 years in business, PIAS has grown to be one of the largest independently-owned music groups in the world, carving out its own in-house recorded music division PIAS [Recordings].Iommi now is more on the right side, aggressive and detailed (not sounding like a bootleg distant, muffled and on the center) , keyboards now low on the mix on the left, snare drums now sounds very present and strong (not distant and low as the original), Geezer storming bass on center, and finally Dios' voice clearer than ever, much better than the original. As usual this “super deluxe” box set is filled with all manners of Dio era Sabbath goodies, poster, book and I believe a tour booklet? Nicholls too is an unsung hero, his playing adding real colour to the sound here that’s never intrusive but always welcome. I always clean new albums after opening them and usually replace their factory sleeve with a MOFI one as to not transfer any factory contaminants back onto a newly cleaned LP. Those who had the honour of seeing Ronnie James Dio in the flesh will attest to just how hard he worked the stage, and that ethic seeps through every note of Live Evil.

While waiting for their bandmates at the studio over a period of several days, Dio and Appice passed the time by listening to the recordings and frequently experimented with the mix by asking the engineer to adjust the levels of various parts. Tension, however, had been building for some time between the band members, with rock journalist Steffan Chirazi observing in 2008 that the story behind the creation of Live Evil is one of "quiet yet savagely visceral turmoil and a band collapsing under their weight of silence, unspoken accusation, and an unforgiving schedule. In the same interview, asked to choose "a track that the engineer didn't cock up", he said: "I liked 'Heaven and Hell' flowing into 'Sign of the Southern Cross'. After the first 2 minutes however the track begins to feel slightly stale and repetitive in its live form. The track continues to the follower The Sign of the Southern Cross with another dose of Heaven and Hell to close the 20 minute medley. Geezer Butler has referred to this album a few times in interviews as “Live in the Studio Evil”, a reference to a lot of the overdubs on it. Following the atmospheric intro of ‘E5150’, the ballsy ‘Neon Knights’ kicks things off with a roar, the locomotive riff unstoppable and Dio in pugnacious form and things don’t let up from there.

Black Sabbath - Live Evil Lyrics and Tracklist | Genius

After that there was no point due to Dio’s ageing voice (which was still great, but not matching a decade ago) There you have the REAL story.Black Sabbath Mk 2 had given their record label two best-selling LPs and were about to present a third. Bolstered by replica tour programme and poster, along with a 40-page book, makes this the ultimate edition of the ultimate live album. Fortunately, such conditions can make for great art and the turmoil surrounding Live Evil certainly added spice to proceedings, and in doing so created the template for every live album that followed. Overall, a great set with a great sound (remix) - don’t forget it is a live album (never listened to the OG version, so cannot compare). It will include the original album remastered and a remix of the album from the original analogue master tapes by longtime band associate Wyn Davis across four compact discs and four LPs.

Live Evil (40th Anniversary Edition) by Black Sabbath Live Evil (40th Anniversary Edition) by Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath’s first official live album, Live Evil, celebrates its 40 thanniversary this year with a new Super Deluxe Edition that introduces newly remixed and remastered versions of the acclaimed double album.

I can now say I’ve heard everything on Live Evil including the Ozzy era songs because I heard them during the times I saw Black Sabbath between 1997 and 2013. Each of these WB CDs came in its own jewel case, complete with artwork, rather than a 2CD jewel case. During the mixing of Live Evil, Dio and drummer Vinny Appice abruptly left the group, leaving original members Iommi and Geezer Butler to carry on. The recordings capture the ferocious chemistry and dark magic that defined this incarnation of Black Sabbath with thrilling live versions of recent tracks like “Neon Knights,” “The Sign Of The Southern Cross,” “Voodoo,” and “Children Of The Sea.
