About this deal

Blacks are good in a well-lit room but there is black crush evident, which will probably go unnoticed by the demographic this TV is aimed at. The feature set of the A7G is improved from previous generations, with the addition of gaming features positioning the Hisense as a cheaper alternative to the likes of LG and Samsung in that area. We are reviewing the 55-inch version, but the performance between the different screen sizes should be similar. The A7G is a solid effort from Hisense, supporting a range of gaming and movie features for those looking for a big-screen telly that doesn’t break the bank, but backlight issues hamper its overall value. Let’s cut to the chase: the 55A7GQ’s picture quality turns out to be hugely disappointing, especially as it arrives amid a generally upward trajectory for Hisense TVs.

The stand supports the TV well, just like it did on the older model, but it takes up a lot of space. Sitting straight onto the screen the image quality was very good, so the positioning of seating will be important with this 50-inch model. Not only can you use this to control the TV but like a standard smart speaker, you can get answers to your questions and it’ll work with the rest of your smart home as well. The supplied remote control is a traditional long plastic affair with the buttons all laid out in a logical manner.

This allows soundtracks that support the technology to place sounds above and around the listener with compatible kit. These cookies help provide information on metrics the number of visitors, bounce rate, traffic source, etc. The app selection is focused rather than bountiful; Netflix has pride of place on the top row and all the UK catch-up apps are covered (as Freeview Play), with Disney+ and Britbox available also. In dim viewing conditions, the black levels were satisfactory but with some noticeable lighter edges to the panel and even if slightly off-axis these black started to look milky and navy, losing the deep black look. You also can’t stick to a static image, meaning you’re condemned to cycle through various pictures against your will.

Dark scenes appear behind a wash of excessive greyness that’s so severe at times that it can become hard to actually make out what’s going on in the picture.

The bezel is discreet enough to not intrude on the TV viewing experience, and the depth of the set is just 78mm without the stand, making it appreciatively slim in appearance. Complexions are warmly expressed (perhaps overcooked in some places) but it makes for an attention-grabbing image.I found the sound quality to be useable for everyday TV viewing in a living room but it lacks any large soundstage or weight for movie soundtracks. It quickly becomes apparent, though, that the black level problems are so fundamental to the 55A7GQ’s image characteristics that nothing in the picture menus really helps.
