About this deal

Plus there's LG's less than fantastic track record for Android platform update that casts doubt on the timeliness of any Android 11 update. Thankfully, a recent update has made juggling apps between the two displays a little easier — similar to LG's Dual Screen accessory, you can transfer apps between the two panels with a three-fingered swipe. Gboard and other third-party keyboards won't work properly with the swivel screen: Instead of intelligently popping up on the secondary screen when it makes sense, you might get a squished keyboard taking up half of the main screen. The Music-Maps combination looks great for driving, but there's one big UI failure: no Skip Ad button on the small screen, leaving you to endure long ads instead of your favorite playlist.

Wi-Fi reception was about on par with the iPhone 12 Pro and behind the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. But the Wing has two screens, with different sizes and aspect ratios, that aren't next to each other and don't form a single rectangle together, and third-party developers don't plan for that. Sitting on my desk next to a OnePlus 8 Pro in a case, it's almost exactly the same thickness, and a little bit taller. The LG Wing 5G is a novelty in the phone world: a bold design to get more screen real-estate without folding the phone. The Wing 5G is perfectly suitable for watching media and casual browsing with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset and 8GB of RAM – specs that manage transitioning in and out of the multi-screen experience just fine. But therein lies the problem: In less than ideal conditions, video shot in this mode quickly starts to become grainy. Even a few months on, the software of the LG Wing feels like a very first-generation user experience. But in a market of black rectangles, the LG Wing 5G is a lovely attempt to bring something new and, crucially, more affordable than its folding counterparts. The LG Wing 5G also doesn’t have its final software yet, so we’re withholding judgment about how suitable it is for consumers who aren’t immediately sold on the swivel-screen idea. Even closing it back up again isn't too tricky, though of course, it's easier if you bring in a second hand.

single-core, 1,858 multi-core on Geekbench; 318 on Basemark Web; and 17fps on-screen, 21fps off-screen with the GFXBench Car Chase graphics benchmark. As such, the LG Wing hasn't received any major platform updates since it landed, though to LG's credit, several security patches and bug fixes have rolled out to our review unit over the past few months. LG has done a better job matching the colors of the two displays than, for example, some of its older Dual Screen offerings. The Surface Duo's two displays are too wide to comfortably move your hands around while holding them at the same time. The T-Mobile version of the Wing can presumably handle T-Mobile's mid-band 4G as well as any other phone on the market.Based on our usage, we expect most users would likely use the main screen most for watching media while doing minor tasks on the mini-screen. LG has announced a few software partners—Rave, Tubi, Ficto, and Naver (which is big in Korea)—but they aren't companies well-known in the US. And although uncertainty surrounds the future of the LG Explorer Project — and the company's mobile division in general — LG did put out one of last year's most unique dual-screen phones.

They didn't seem dimmer than shots taken with the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and they were plenty sharp. And, infuriatingly, apps need to be manually whitelisted to be able to show on the secondary display. Much of the innovation of the Wing is undermined by the reality of using Android — LG's Android — on this form factor. The exciting part is that they all do so in different ways, and it'll be interesting to see which one rises to the top. In our time with the phone, it’s been able to handle the complex multi-screen features with only very occasional minor delays, most evident when switching apps. The first phone to emerge from the LG Explorer Project was the LG Wing, a deliberately oddball handset that transplanted the guts of the LG Velvet into a dual-screen design with a swiveling main display. It's mostly inoffensive, though lacking some of the visual polish of the Samsung Galaxy UI that it's clearly imitating. The most interesting part of the Wing's software experience is the new experiences it enables for the dual-screen pairing. We haven’t used this much in our short time, but it’s a neat tool in the phone’s kit for folks who get around more action photography. We haven’t yet found out how to add to this list, and the only way we found to use a different app on the main screen is to set up dual-app combo shortcuts, which you can do in Settings > Display > Swivel Home > Multi-Screen Shortcut (phew).

Hands On With the LG Wing: The Most Useful Dual - PCMag UK

The idea is you can comfortably hold the camera in your hand and pan around using controls on the secondary display. And for the most part, this works pretty well: With a reasonable amount of light, you'll get incredibly smooth video, with hand shake being completely obliterated by LG's software stabilization. In that same upside-down configuration, LG's keyboard even allows you to swipe outwards for a more ergonomic, split keyboard arrangement. While the Wing in its current form may be a non-starter, I'm still glad LG is trying unique ideas like this. This is especially the case if you do any typing, which is likely what you’ll be using the small screen for much of the time.Or, rotate 90 degrees and you could have a small video playing on the second screen while you scroll through Twitter on the main panel. There is one last option for swiveled-open photography: Dual Recording, which uses the pop-up selfie camera to record video from the front and back simultaneously – both the action and the reaction, so to speak, and it’s clear this mode is meant for live-streaming. Meanwhile, LG's software, while inoffensive enough, struggles to keep up with the multitasking demands of a dual-screen handset, and the company's poor upgrade track record casts doubts on when users will be able to expect an update to Android 11.
