Higgins’s own volume is illustrated by the Turner prize-winning Chris Ofili, whose drawings are charming and airy, suggestive in spirit of Matisse’s pencil sketches. The book opens on a hot, stark island, where Medusa - now with writhing snakes for hair instead of her previous dark locks - lives here in exile with her two sisters.

Onto this island sails a young lad, Perseus, who is on a quest, also at the behest of his fickle elders.
