The commentary with Brown and Baxter offers a nice balance between technical discussion and thoughts on the story and Kubrick himself. The Shining arrives on 4K in a two-disc keepcase with new art, a matching slipcover, and a Digital Copy redemption code.

On the contrary, watching it again in 2019, in all of its new 4K and HDR glory, the unique combination of Kubrick’s visionary direction, Jack Nicholson’s stunning performance, and scene after scene of truly iconic storytelling and imagery hits home even harder. The Shining still has the power to hypnotize and horrify and a lot of that comes from the excellent score. Jack Nicholson turns in the performance of his career, while Kubrick’s direction is outstanding and in the end, it all forms of the spookiest and memorable films of all time.So long as we have TVs that only support either HDR10+ or Dolby Vision, rather than both, it’s great to see Warners catering for everyone with such a key release. Right off the bat, you have to just let go of the fact that Kubrick’s The Shining is not a particularly faithful adaptation of the Stephen King novel upon which its based. When the hotel staff finally departs, leaving Jack, Wendy, and Danny alone, everything seems fine at first.

This is very unconventional by the standards of most making-of documentaries; it starts, for instance, with a long section showing Nicholson in his off-set dressing room, complete with him brushing his teeth, and then follows him as he walks from his room to the expectant set.But Crothers is the most disarming here; he seems completely normal, friendly, and welcoming… until his character takes an odd turn. The update comes a month before “Doctor Sleep,” King’s sequel to “The Shining,” arrives in theaters November 8. If yo have watched the excellent documentary Room 237, it is very apparent that every detail is important in The Shining.
