The digital versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 were released on August 21, 2012 as a bundle on the Xbox 360 and individually on PS3 and PS Vita, while Peace Walker was released for the Xbox 360 and PS3 on August 28, 2012. The control scheme for the PS Vita version has been overhauled to support the PS Vita's touchscreen capabilities, and to account for the lack of the R2, L2, R3, L3, and pressure sensitive buttons.

See, the content of each game is pretty much the same as its original format (notable exception: Metal Gear Solid 3's online mode), and the gameplay is exactly the same -- for better or worse. Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is a compilation of remastered ports of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (outside Japan), Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater with the individual games all branded as HD Edition. The joke's always been that Metal Gear is more like watching a movie than playing a game, and revisiting Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 really shows the origin of that jab. The game mostly takes place indoors, which means lots of clean polygons and smooth surfaces that already looked fine in SD and thus don’t show much improvement in HD.

It would include the HD Collection, and the Ultimate version would add to the package with the PS3 game Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, a download code for Metal Gear Solid and five exclusive art cards.If anything, this collection highlights how much better Peace Walker could have been had it been developed for consoles from the get-go. Certain visual effects are reduced to the point where they are seemingly missing such as depth of field and rain. Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection ( Metal Gear Solid: HD Edition in Japan) is a HD re-release of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and (in the overseas console versions) Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PlayStation Vita. This version is based on the "Subsistence" edition, allowing players full camera control with the right analogue stick.
